Typical Day
Patrol assigned areas to maintain public safety
Investigate crimes and accidents, compile notes and reports and provide testimony in courts of law
Arrest criminal suspects
Provide emergency assistance to victims of accidents, crimes and natural disasters
May supervise and co-ordinate the work of other police officers
Working Conditions
Most police officers work outside. Their environment includes dangerous road conditions, encounters with armed suspects and other hazards. Police work is dangerous and stressful. They must remain confident and calm to respond effectively in emergencies and crises.
Transferable Skills
Need to have good skills in Social Studies, Physical Education, and English in order to be an police officer. You will be required to write reports. Some police departments have requirements on body fat percentage.
Police officers' salaries vary widely, depending on experience and employer.
Most officers begin their career with a work period of approximately 1 year. The salaries received during this time are a range from around $35,000 to $55,000 a year.
Full-time police constables earn anywhere from around $50,000 to $85,000 a year, depending on the police force and their level of experience.
Senior level officers earn more than $100,000 a year.

The work prospects will continue to be average because the employment growth rate will likely be below average. The demand for police services is expected to keep pace with the population growth.
Completion of secondary school is required.
Completion of a college program or university degree in law and security or in the social sciences may be required.
A three- to six-month police training program is provided.
Physical agility, strength, fitness and vision requirements must be met.
