The Road To The EPQ
And now I'm here...
AO3 -Develop and Realise
AO4 - Review
The process of carrying out research
Two different topic ideas
SEN education
SEN Education + Technology use
Using the
internet
,
videos
,
magazines
,
books
and
primary research
...
I r
esearched
:
How technology
is
used
within
SEN education
Why technology
is
used
within
SEN education
Can technology
be
used
to
motivate children
with
special educational needs
?
Placement
Primary research
Participant observation
Interaction
with
students
,
teachers
and
teaching assistants
Creating
and
filling in placement log
on a
weekly basis
Identifying key findings
to
mention
in
dissertation
and
evaluation
work
ICT
use within
schools
use within
SEN

schools
Within
mainstream schools
The
media
and
body image
how does seeing
images
of
celebrities affect body image?
All of the
questions
which I
thought
about and
focused
on...
What
is it?
How is it
different
from
mainstream education
?
How could I
easily
and
interestingly research
this
topic
?
How could I more
specifically research
this
topic
?
What
can I
focus
on?
What different resources
can I use to
research
this
topic
?
6 months later I have almost finished the extended project, and have a lot of work and experience to show for it
Has been
lengthy
but
enjoyable
I've taken
full responsibility
for all
planning
,
doing
and
personal reviewing
At times felt
tedious
and
time consuming
Has required a lot of
effort
and
will-power
Called upon
and
used
a lot of
information
from
large varied number
of
sources
Used a
wide range
of
skills
(
analytical
,
communication
,
problem solving
) throughout process
Used a
wide
and
appropriate range
of
technologies

But...
I have
got a lot out of it
...
I have
learned
a
lot about myself
I have
learned
a
lot
about
SEN
and
technology use
I have
realised
the
importance
of setting,
working towards
and
meeting deadlines
I have had
six months
to
plan
and
produce
a
project
with an
interesting
and
engaging outcome
200+ hours
over
6 months
Followed
plan
,
research
,
develop
and
realise
,
review
process
Hard work
and I
enjoyed
it
Learnt
a
lot
, both
positive
and
negative

Frank Wise
SEN School was a
beneficial
experience
What I did
What I learnt
2
mind-maps
, IT and Media
Additional reading
around both subjects, found
IT
most
interesting

Devised a
variety
of
questions
to base project around
Created a
plan
using
Microsoft software
covering all the activities needed to meet project
goals
within
timescales
(
initially basic
using
Microsoft Word
and
Excel
, progressing to a more a
detailed plan
using
Microsoft Project
)
Arranged
placement
at
Frank Wise SEN School
, class
6FG
, every
Wednesday pm
from October 2013 (still there and
enjoying
it)
Mind-mapping
was a good way to get
all ideas
into
one place
; being a
visual person
, it helped me to
condense
and
focus
my
ideas
Creating and following basic plans in word and excel, and more detailed plans in Microsoft Project, has made me realise that
different tools
and
approaches
can be used depending on the
level
of
detail
needed.
Working to a
time deadline
has been
important
, it is shown I am well
organised
and
work hard
, as do not want to let others down
What I did
What I learnt
Carrying out research = a process I found
easy
yet often
repetitive
and
time consuming
Researched a
variety
of
different topic areas
then
narrowed
it
down
to be
more specific
Used
various resources
to carry out research -
internet
,
books
,
videos
,
magazines
,
Frank Wise School
(
primary research
)
Recorded all information gathered in '
research source record forms
'
All
information
was
recorded virtually
- not handwritten
Created '
placement log
' to record all
observations
made whilst at
Frank Wise
Adapted questions
to suit the
information obtained
across all
research
Researching
is a
very lengthy process
which requires a
lot
of
thought
and
time
The
internet
is the
best resource
to use as it allows
quick
and
easy access
to
vast amounts
of
information

Carrying out
primary research
has to be done
carefully
in order for those
being observed
to
not change
their
behaviour
There is not a
lot
of
information
in
books
relating to
IT
and
technology
use as a
motivational tool
within
SEN education
I have based my extended project around
IT
and
technology
use by
SEN students
and
schools
, coming up with this
question
to explore...

'Does the
prospect
of being able to use
IT
or
technology
as a
reward
give
SEN students
something to work towards (a
goal
), therefore ensuring that they
sustain
the
expected level
of
behaviour
?'
What I did
What I learnt
How to use
Apple Macs
and
iPads
Extended skills
on
Microsoft software,
e.g. MS
Project
How to use
specialist equipment
- e.g.
skoog
(music blocks for
visually impaired/blind
students)
I have the ability to carry out a
lot of tasks
at the
same time

I am able to work with a
wide range
of
people
with a
wide range
of
abilities
Improved/developed
my
PLTS
(
Personal
,
Learning
,
Thinking

Skills
)
Personal
- working with
SEN students
built my
confidence
Learning
-
positively
developed
independent learning
skills
Thinking
-
improved
my
ability
to
'think on my feet'
and to
consider positives/negatives
before carrying out
tasks
Solved problems
- e.g.
no response
to
surveys
- had to
gain information
from
elsewhere
What I did
What I learnt
In order to
write
a
better dissertation
, I should have set a
target audience
for the
entire project
I
understand
the
process
of
putting together
and
completing
a
large
and
complex project

I have
gained
and
worked upon
a lot of
different skills
which can be
transferred
across lots of
different situations
in life - e.g.
planning
,
time-management
,
working towards goals
and
people skills
I
really enjoyed
volunteering at
Frank Wise SEN School
, and will
continue
to
volunteer
there
Written evaluations
to
personally assess
the
work
I have done, to work out whether there would have been anything which I would have
done differently
Presented
all of the
work
that I have done in a
virtual form
- on a
computer/laptop
using
various different document formats
to make work
concise
and
easy
to read (with addition of
spelling
and
grammar checker
)
I appreciate the time you have taken to watch this presentation, and would now like to give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have!
You may notice throughout this
presentation
that there is
lack
of
images referencing
and
evidencing
my time at
Frank Wise
, this is something that I
would
have
liked
to have
included
, but as the
students
are
regarded
as
vulnerable persons
, I was
unable to
do so
