The hotel kicks out the Graysons for being jewish and the hotel business deal is then out of the question for Joe. Setting What I Saw and How I Lied is a coming-of-age story set in 1947. The story starts off in Queens, New York and then moves to Florida. Rising Action When Evelyn Spooner's father comes back from World War 11, he falls back into their normal life very quickly. After recieving a mysterious phone call, he moves his family to Florida for a vacation. Here, Evie meets handsome Peter Coleridge and falls in love. Joe meets the Graysons and quickly decides to go into a hotel business with them. Conflict Climax One morning Joe decides to take Peter and Beverly out on a boat ride, leaving Evie at home. Evie starts to get worried when her parents and Peter haven't showed up after a few hours had passed. There was talk about a hurricane coming through that morning and everyone was evacuated out of the hotel to a safer place. The next day after the hurricane hit, Evie's parents show up with tragic news about Peter's death. Conclusion The Spooner family was taken to court to determine whether the death was an accident or not. After many court hearings, Evie was finally up to talk, it was all up to her. She has the option to take up for her parents or for her first love. Who will she choose? This story describes the loss of innocence of Evie Spooner. In the beginning, Evie is practicing smoking a fake cigarette and can't wait to grow up. Throughout the story, Evie buys new clothes, falls in love, and learns to lie like a true adult. Review "What I Saw and How I Lied" won the National Book Award and was produced in 2008. It is full of twists and turns that keep the reader interested. Its coming-of-age fiction style is easy to read and is good for all ages. This book was very interesting and instructive by telling how she solved her problems and who she trusted in through all the lies and deception. I recommend this book to middle and high school students. By: Judy Blundell Sources Judy Blundell, image, http://www.nationalbook.org/nba2008_ypl_blundell.html
