Résumé

Your
name
should be the
first thing
people notice
Follow best practices regarding word processing and desktop publishing - i.e.
Robin Williams rules
Robin Williams Rules - Part 1
Make good use of
white space
NEVER use the space bar to align things (Use
tabs
or
tables
to accomplish this)
Only ONE space after punctuation
Be consistent with fonts and spacing
Serif fonts for paragraphs/sentences
Sans serif fonts for titles, lists, headings, etc.
Serifs
are the
little lines
on the ends of characters
Be creative with
borders
and
shading
Robin Williams Rules - Part 2
Watch out for
widows
and
orphans
A
widow
is a single word (or portion of a word) left hanging on the last line of a paragraph
An
orphan
is a final line of a paragraph which gets bumped to the next column or page
Use
real quotes
; reserve ' & " for feet & inches
Use 0 for zero and O for oh; same for 1 and l
Use special characters where appropriate
Ex: Hold left ALT, type 0233, release ALT to get the é symbol
Robin Williams Rules - Part 3
Avoid using ALL CAPS
Never underline
Use italics, boldface, or alternate fonts
Use
bullets
rather than dashes for lists
Avoid abbreviations
Use em dashes and en dashes where appropriate
Make use of different fonts - within reason!
Almost done ...
Your name should appear on every page; make use of a
header
List references
(including phone #) of people who have observed you in the classroom
Consider a separate reference page
Print your resume on a
laser printer
- and use
nice paper
(nothing garish & NOT photo paper!)
Paper clips can slip and fall off;
staple
instead
Have another set of eyes look it over; there should be NO mistakes!
