The rose : The rose is a common symbolism for love, beauty and passion in many societies.
The Nightingale : There are various meanings to the use of this particular bird. It is often used in poetry for it is a ''voice of nature'' and is a creation in itself to inspire art. (Wilde promotes the concept of ''art for art's sake'')
a) Material: The girl prefers owning material things to feelings, she evens prefers jewels over flowers. However, the student, after being rejected by the girl also tends to give more importance to the material side of knowledge of facts and criticize the use of love.
'' It is not half as useful as Logic, for it does not prove anything, and it is always telling one of things that are not going to happen, and making one believe things that are not true. In fact, it's quite unpractical and as in this age to be practical is everything, I shall go back to Philosophy and study Metaphysics. ''
b) Emotional: The nightingale is all about the importance of love because it cannot be bought. She thinks it is so important that she even sacrifices her own life for the beauty of love.
'' It is more precious than emeralds, and dearer than fine opals. Pearls and pomegranates cannot buy it, nor is it set forth in the market-place. It may not be purchased of the merchants, nor can it be weighed out in the balance of gold. ''
'' Yet Love is better than life [...]. ''
The rose : Overall, the story covers the importance that one accords to love in his life, but also the downsides of love, such as sacrifices, risks and deceptions, most like a rose hiding its spines.
The importance of love in one's life
1. Conflict: The girl does not want to be with the boy, she prefers expensive jewels over love.
1) Character: The student and the girl he wants to dance with.
2) Situation: She asked for a red rose so she would let the main character dance with her, but there aren’t any red roses
1) Conscience: The bird sacrifices its life so the girl would dance with the student. He did it in the name of love.
2) Desire: The student wants to dance with the girl.
1. Chronological order: There are no flashbacks.
The story is told from an omniscient narrator. The narrator uses the third person to tell the story and he is not involved in it.
Point of View
The narrator tells the story from an omniscient point of view, he only reports facts and does not tell his opinion. However, the narrator decided on his own to show us the guy and the bird's side. He did it to demonstrate the nastiness of the girl by getting us attached to the guy.

A lot of authors used romantic love in their books as if they wanted us to believe.
For example: Jane Austen with Pride and Prejudice (1813).
Poems written about love were seen by critics as jokes, not to take seriously
People didn’t describe love as we know it,
it was more of a sexual attraction than romantic love (Pessimist)
- Born as an illegitimate child; not raised by his parents even though his father paid his education
- Grew with the Greek love (no problem with homosexuality) – was introduced to gay sex around 1886 (while he was married)
- Editor of a magazine for women
- 1888 (the nightingale and the rose)
- 1897: After he was out of jail, Constance Wilde was already refusing to meet Wilde or allow him to see their sons, though she kept him supplied with money.
- Was arrested after a “false” accusation and because of his “indecent behavior with men” committed the crime of sodomy.
Queensberry's lawyers thus hired private detectives to find evidence of Wilde's homosexual liaisons to prove the fact of the accusation
