Transcript of Solomon Asch Conformity Experiment

Solomon Asch's
Conformity Experiment Classification of Research Variables Independent variables: Dependent variables: Amount of group pressure
Operationally defined:
Size of the majority group
Whether the wrong answer was given unanimously
Presence of a "correct" partner
Whether the responses of the participant were written or vocal How much the participants conformed
Operationally defined:
Number of trials (out of 18) in which the participant conformed
% of participants overall who conformed Experimental Groups Control Groups Confederates included confederates: people who know the true aim of the experiment and are included in the trials as fake participants Each participant was placed in a room with a varied number of confederates, shown a card with a line on it, followed by a card with 3 lines on it (A, B, C), then asked to say aloud which line matched the line on the first card in length. The participant was always the last to respond.

The experimental groups varied in size, the confederates' responses, and whether the participant's answer was written or verbal. No confederates included The control groups contained only one real participant with one experimenter and no confederates. The same line tests were given to the participates the same number of times.

These trials were run to ensure that the line questions were easily correctly answered. Which type of research design? EXPERIMENT! Why was this an experiment? Because it's called "Solomon Asch's Conformity Experiment." And because the research design was set up in a controlled way where the researcher, Asch, could manipulate the independent variables to observe their effects on the dependent variables.
