Transcript of The Wanderers

The Wanderers
The Aztecs were known as the wanderers before 1200ce. They believed their tribal god Huitzilopochtli would protect them as they wandered and also show them where to settle down. They believed the sign that he sent for them to settle down was an eagle sitting on a cactus eating a serpent and so they made the city Tenochtitlan.
Architecture
Other than the chinampas the Aztecs also made an aqueduct that ran from the mainland to the city for 3 miles making two aqueducts just in case one was clogged. Aztecs made super highways around Mexico and delivered messages by relay runners. It was faster than modern postal services.
Fall of the Aztecs
The Spanish army came in 1519 and by 1521 Spanish forces and Tlaxcalan warriors led by Cortes took over the empire. They captured the emperoror Cuahtemoc and Tenochtitlan.

Agriculture
The Aztec had a unique way of farming. They made artificial islands with dirt, mud and stone. They called the artificial islands chinampas. The most valuable crop to the Aztecs was corn or maize because it could be stored for a very long and it could be ground into flour to be made into other food. They also grew squash, pumpkin, gourd, beans, tomatoes, avocados and guavas. They also used cocoa beans for currency.
Gods and Beliefs
The Aztecs had many gods like Earth Mother who stood for the harshness of life. Tezcatlipocan is a god of magic death and war. Many people believed that he was at war with Quetzalcoatl the lord of life. Xipe Totec was the god of new life and suffering. He is shone wearing human skin. The Aztecs made sacrifices to make sure that the world doesn't go into an apocalypse.
Aztec Civilization
Why I trusted these websites
I trusted these sources because they all shared a lot of information and it was consistent. They were very informative.
Reflection Statement
When I chose the Aztecs I didn't a lot about them other than they were in early American civilization. I am surprised about how they farmed and their agriculture and also their sacrifices.
Connection Statement
Interest Statement
I am interested in the Aztecs because I have always heard of the Maya but I wanted to do a civilization that I barely knew so I could learn about it. I remember hearding about the Aztecs once and I thought it would be fun to learn more about it.
I feel like the Aztecs have very similar thought processes and that is how I can relate to them. They are very inventive the way they made the chinampas and aqueducts.
