Transcript of CORRELATIVE STUDY BETWEEN READING

RESEARCH TOPIC:
“CORRELATIVE STUDY BETWEEN THE READING SPEED ABILITY VS THE
READING COMPREHENSION SKILL ON THE STUDENTS ATTENDING
INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH II COURSE OF BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ENGLISH AT
UNIVERSIDAD DE ORIENTE”.
RESEARCH QUESTION
How does the reading speed ability influence the reading comprehension skill with
students attending Intermediate English II course of the Bachelor’s degree in English at
Universidad de Oriente?

SCOPES
GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT
This research took place at Universidad de Oriente in San Miguel City, El Salvador.
TIME CONTEXT
This research was developed from March 2015 to April 2015.
THEORETICAL CONTEXT
This research was focused on the speed reading ability which consist on the ability to
read quickly or slowly also it was focused on the reading comprehension which consist
in reading a text, process it and understanding it. These two elements can be
considered the most relevant when reading a text.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE
- To contrast the level of reading speed with that of reading comprehension skills
performed to the students attending Intermediate English II course of Bachelor’s
degree in English at Universidad de Oriente.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- To measure the reading speed ability of the students attending Intermediate
English II course of Bachelor’s degree in English at Universidad de Oriente.
- To assess the reading comprehension skill of the students attending Intermediate
English II course of Bachelor’s degree in English at Universidad de Oriente.
Reading Fluency
Reading fluency encompasses the speed or rate of reading, as well as the ability to
read materials with expression. Meyer and Felton defined fluency as "'the ability to read
connected text rapidly, smoothly, effortlessly, and automatically with little conscious
attention to the mechanics of reading, such as decoding"

Reading comprehension
The purpose of reading is comprehension — getting meaning from written text. Find out
what else research tells us about the active process of constructing meaning, and how
good readers consciously employing comprehension strategies.

HYPOTHESES
OVERALL HYPOTHESIS
- Reading comprehension depends on the speed reading of the students attending
Intermediate English II course of Bachelor’s degree in English at Universidad de
Oriente.
SPECIFIC HYPOTHESES
The higher the level of speed reading the lower of the reading comprehension
The lower the level of speed reading the higher comprehension

Research Method
Quantitative research refers to the systematic empirical investigation of social phenomena via statistical, mathematical or numerical data or computational techniques.
The objective of quantitative research is to develop and employ mathematical models, theories and/or hypotheses pertaining to phenomena. The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides the fundamental connection between empirical observation and mathematical expression of quantitative
relationships.
Population
The Target population for this study was 125 students who were enrolled in the second
year of the Bachelor’s Degree in English attending the Intermediate English II course.
The population was divided into three groups (A, B & C) in which group A was
29
composed by 67 students (54%) group B by 38 students (30%) on the population and
group C by 20 students (16%). The sample was made up of 30 percent of the target
population

Chart #1
How the data was acquired
- A short article was read by the students
-Time was measured.
-Comprehension was assessed by true and false questions
Conclusions.
Based on the research process carried out about Reading Speed Ability to evaluate
Reading Comprehension Skill; it can be concluded that:
 English teachers should motivate students to read more books.
 Students that take more time to read usually understand better a text but without
the proper manage of the information that knowledge will be not worth.
 Lack of vocabulary is one of the most powerful failures that English students
face.
Recommendations
To the students:
 To improve the reading comprehension skill by creating a glossary to acquire
more vocabulary.

To Universidad de Oriente:
 To promote a reading club where students can interact and share readings
