Children's Television Shows
Co-authored by:
Wayne Denny, Melissa Holland, Sarah Kelly,

Introduction
Interactive television shows can be a great learning tool for younger children. Most popular children's shows feature bright colours, movement and some form of music and dancing which allows the children to participate and move around. Playschool, Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, The Wiggles and Peppa Pig all make learning fun and entertaining for children while teaching them the basics of literacy, numeracy, communication and social interaction. Research clearly demonstrates that age-appropriate, educational children’s programs can be beneficial to children and are associated with cognitive and academic enhancement (Kirorian, Wartell & Anderson, 2008).

Children’s TV shows are effective for generating new ideas for learning and use characters to motivate children. When children see their favourite characters engaged in learning activities and having fun, they want to play too. (Bryson, n.d.). There is however still significant potential to capitalise on their ability to enhance development and learning. (Television, Digital Media and Children’s Learning, 2008).

When deciding if a source of information is credible there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. Currency of the information is a key factor, ensuring that the information being used is current and has been regularly updated and maintained will ensure that the information being used is not out of date and hasn't been proceeded by new and more relevant information. How accessible the information is may come into how credible it is. Many scholarly articles will need a subscription to access them, however these articles have been published and many of them have been peer reviewed. On the other hand the source could be freely available but has not been published in an academic capacity or peer reviewed, so may not be as credible. Considering if a source is first person or third person can make a considerable difference to the sources credibility, first person accounts are more likely to be credible but their bias must be considered. Verifying information by checking an additional source will ensure that the information is correct and that the original source doesn't have any commercial intent. Checking if the source is the original source of information for that topic can also play a part in considering if that is a credible source, for example is the source a professional company or organisation that originally came up with the concept if not has the author of the source been given the 'stamp of approval' by the professional company (Metzger, 2007).
