By: Kim Platz The Other Wes Moore
One Name, Two Fates "All you have to do is wear one, and every time you see jakes roll by, you just push this button and say something. When your shift is over, you come by, and I'll get you your money." Wes #2 gets started in the drug game as a lookout "The directions he had given me were fake. They'd led me nowhere but to the middle of the woods." Wes #1 goes to military school and tries to escape "I would be the highest-ranking cadet in the entire corps of over seven hundred people." Valley Forge Military Academy selects Wes #1 to be the regimental commander for the 70th corps of cadets "The bus was packed with a motley group of men and women who represented the spectrum of ages, neighborhoods, backstories and motivations. But they were united in looking for a new chance." Wes #2 enters the Job Corps program in an attempt to turn his life around. "I heard that my father had "passed on" but had no idea where he'd gone." Wes #1's Father dies Wes #2 meets his father for the first time START FINISH Mary looked down at her son and uttered the words she had never said before and never thought she would have to say. "Wes, meet your father." Theme 1: Separation and loss Losing someone because they died has a significantly different effect on your life than losing someone to abandonment Wes #2 pulls a knife during an altercation with a kid in the neighborhood "Rule number one: If someone disrespects you, you send a message so fierce that they won't have the chance to do it again." Theme #2: Fear Fear motivates you. Wes's fear of losing the respect of the boys in the neighborhood drives him to take drastic measures to show everyone he should not be messed with. Wes #1 almost gets arrested for vandalizing KK "The cops gave us a gift that day, and i swore i would never get caught in a situation like that again." Wes #2 gets arrested for shooting someone His mother stared at him, her face drained of emotion. "It's too late," she told him. "Wes is already gone." Wes #2, his brother Tony, and two other men rob a jewelery store and a police officer is killed. Wes is sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole "With the knowledge of the sentences his brother and the other two defendants had received, he'd known his fate would be the same." Wes #1 goes to South Africa to learn about the culture He then returns home to graduate from Johns Hopkins University as the first Rhodes Scholar in 13 years, and the first African American Rhodes Scholar in school history. Theme #3: Morals/Values After going to military school, Wes #1's morals changed and he now values different things "It was a different psychological environment, where my normal expectations were inverted, where leadership was honored, and class clowns were ostracized." Wes #2 tried to turn his life around but was unable to find the strength "Your father wasn't there because he couldn't be, my father wasn't there because he chose not to be. We're going to mourn their absence in different ways."
