H ormone uteinizing estrogen progesterone Before Ovulation Ovulation After Ovulation 2. Pituitary gland releases FSH. FSH causes follicle to mature 2. A sharp increase in estrogen causes a sharp increase of FSH and LH. This causes ovulation 1. Menstruation: lining of uterus (endometrium) and blood vessels break down and pass through the vagina (menstrual period). The endometrium is at its thinnest 3. Estrogen causes endometrium to thicken 1. Ruptured follicle becomes corpus luteum 2. Corpus luteum secretes progesterone. Endometrium is now at its thickest Fertilization & Implantation No Fertilization & Implantation Menstruation stops. Corpus luteum continues to produce hormones The oocyte disintegrates. Corpus luteum becomes corpus albicans. Menstruation occurs. } Cycle repeats every month
