Transcript of Hiking the Appalachian Trail Performance Task

Welcome to our nature hike! Let's start by answering our original problem. If we have 120 hikers and there are 8 hikers to a group, how many groups do we need? Use the drawing you made to
help you solve.
Okay, we have 15 groups. Let's go!

We have decided to walk the Appalachian Trail. It is 2, 184 miles long! We'll never make it in a single day. If we travel 12 miles a day, how many days will it take us to travel the length of the trail?
182 DAYS! No way. I don't want to walk that long.
I think we can walk for a week in small sections.
If we walked 12 miles a day for one week,
how far can we get?
84 miles is a pretty good hike!

We will have to stop for occasional breaks because 12 miles is a long walk. If we stopped after every 3 miles, how many breaks will we get (including the last stop)? Draw a number line to help you solve.
0 3 6 9
I think 4 breaks a day is perfect!

We need to make sure we have enough water for the trip. If we bring 6 bottles of water, per person (8), per day (7) of our trip, how many water bottles will we need?
6 x 8 x 7 = 336 bottles
We have 4 mules that will be traveling with us and helping to carry our camping gear. I think each mules should carry the same amount of water.
How many water bottles (336) will each of the 4 mules carry?
84 Bottles is still a lot of water for each of the mules (considering everything else they have). If each of the 4 mules carries 50 bottles, and we separate the rest of the bottles equally between all the hikers in our group (8), how many bottles will each hiker carry? (Remember there are 336 bottles.)
4 x 50 = 200
336 - 200 = 136
136 ÷ 8 = 17
What a great trip!
Thanks for hiking with me!
