THE COLD WAR
The Cold War started in 1947 and ended in 1991. The war was between the US along with NATO and the Soviet Union along with the Warsaw pact. It is named the Cold War because there was no direct meeting of military combat, it was more a psychological war. The war began after World War 2 and ended in 1991 with the fall of the Soviet Union. There were many historical events that occured during the cold war. There were two more wars, the Vietnam War and Korean War.
One of the most Historical Events that happened during the Cold War was the space race. It was a competition between the Soviet Union and the US in space exploration. It was between 1957 and 1975. The race was to be the first country to make the most significant advancements in space travel which also created a change to the education system by placing more emphasis on maths and science. In 1955 both counties announced within four days of each other that they would be launching an artificial satellite into space by 1957 to 1958.
After the nazis were defeated and World War 2 ended in 1945, Germany was left ungoverned and deeply scared by the events in WW2. After the war Germany along with it's Capital Berlin, were secured and divided into 4 districts. Each district was then governed by either the US, France, United Kingdom or the Soviet Union. The US had stayed out of most of the European affairs during WW2 but was now one of the super powers along with the USSR also called the Soviet Union. The four counties had their different ideas and forms of government .
The US, France and United Kingdom were all capitalist Counties but the Soviet Union was a Communist country. The leaders at this time were Joseph Stalin the leader of the soviet Union , Winston Churchill Prime Minister of The United Kingdom and Harry S. Truman the President of the US.

In 1957 the Soviets released Sputnik 1 an artificial satellite. It was the first satellite released into the Earths orbit on October 4th, 1957. This sent fear all over the US. The US believed that if the Soviet's had a rocket powerful enough to send a satellite into space they could send an atomic bomb to destroy the US.
On December 6, 1957 the US attempted to lauch the Vanguard TV3 which was a satellite into Earths orbit. However the launch only reached 1.2m high then exploded.
Then on the 29th of July 1958 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration known as NASA was founded. The US started building rockets, satellite's and hiring men to travel into space.
The US planned to launch their first manned mission Apollo 1, on February 21st 1967 but unfortunately the rocket never made it off the ground because on the 27th of January 1967 during a launch pad test, a fire erupted in the cabin killing the three crew members on board .
The Soviets were the first to send a human into space. On the 12th of April 1961 Yuri Gagarin completed an orbit around Earth.
The first successful US manned mission was Apollo 7. It was launched on October 11th and landed on October 22nd 1968. Then on December 21st Apollo 8 was the first space craft to leave earths orbit. The first to see Earth as a whole planet and to see the other side of the moon. It travelled around the moon's orbit then back to Earth. Then Apollo 9 happened on March 3rd, 1969. Apollo 10 wasmon May 18th, 1969 which was like a dress rehearsal for Apollo 11.
On the 29th of July 1969, Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" E Aldrin and Micheal Collins became the first to successfully land on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first to step foot on the moon, followed by Buzz Aldrin. The US had won the race to the moon.
Australia played a major role in the Apollo 11 Mission. Leading up to Apollo 11 the US asked to use two telescopes to help with the transmission of images from the moon back to earth. The US also requested to use a backup station in Parkes in N.S.W in case the others failed .
