Christina Ye Richard Notkin Style Background Notkin, Richard (b. 1948, Chicago, IL, lives in Helena, MT). A full-time studio artist in Helena, MT.

As a well-known American artist, although Notkin is well inspired by the Yixing wares of China (circa 1500 AD to the present), he still maintains his separate cultural identity. His famous series of unglazed stone ware teapots combines both the style of Yixing wares and his own perspective.

Being active in the 20th-21st century, Richard makes technically uses sculpted images of war, death, and destruction as political statement. About Richard Notkin studied under Ken Ferguson at the Kansas City Art Institute, earning a BFA in 1970

under Robert Arneson at the University of California, where he earned an MFA in 1973. 20-21st Century
In the same time, movies, music and the media had a major influence on fashion and trends in all aspects of life. And American culture spread over the world in these two decades.

New styles and explorations such as expressionism, Dadaism, cubism, de stijl, abstract expressionism and surrealism are formed and developed.

The modern art movement revolutionized art and culture and set the stage for both Modernism and its counterpart postmodern art as well as other contemporary art practices. About the Ceramic Work "Reflecting the current dilemmas of our contemporary human civilization" is the main idea of Richard's work. Technique Richard works predominantly in clay, but he also made use of wood, metals, and even glass. Richard's Value In Richard's statement, his art is just used as metaphor to show his inner thinking.

The origins of conflict in human culture is widely explored in his "Heart Teapot" series. The ceramic work reveals both the collective conflicts between various nations, ethnic groups, religions, etc., and those inherent in relationships between individuals. Believing the seeds of all conflict are to be found in each human heart, several pieces in the series are created to commemorate specific instances of the human species' dark side, but the message of each piece is intended to outlive its respective moment in history.

Using his work to express his anger to the folly of the war, Richard used his special crafts to remind people not to repeat the same mistakes over the history.

Experiencing the highly developed and rapid war-time centuries, Richard believes that the spirit and power of art are exemplified by a work of art's ability to transcend time and cultural boundaries. Jerry Metcalf Foundation Artist Fellowship in 1999. Richard continues his work through 20-21st century, and his main focus is on the United State's culture. There are numerous wars and recession during these two centuries.

World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, terrorism all trouble the citizens in the U.S. a lot. Conflicts and disagreements among nations become the main issue. At first, I was thrilled by his works' creativity. The works look simple and always have scared faces on them, showing a strong sense of death and disappointment. In most of his work, Richard leaves his pieces unglazed, for example the cube skull teapot-1980.
And the body he normally used is a fire clay with grog.

Working mostly with industrial ceramic processes, Richard is good at using multi-part molds in one work. First designing prototype models in clay and then fabricating plaster molds.
He makes the surface strong and smooth in order to be easily removed from a mold. In this way, Richard's work can be easily reproduced many times.


The ceramist creates his work with incredible texture, for example, he used a pen tool to make the texture of the dog's fur. After I did the research of the artist, I notice that his working era is very close to my life and he does try to express his feeling of the society through his well-made work. Richard Notkin's statement is also inspiring. He described his work as a means to warn people. As an unti-war person, he massively uses blood, heart, skull head images to relate battles and death. Starting from the style of ancient Chinese ceramic work, and gradually developing his own value, Richard Notkin definitely exploits his skill as a craftsman in an amazing way. For my future projects Besides learning and even imitating the technique of the former successful works, I need to develop my own idea about what I really want to present from my art. To make a beautiful and smooth ceramic work requires effort, but to use art as a means to express self ideas would be more attracting. Be more focus on details. Since now I am eventually be familiar with making a united work, the next step for me would be adding details and decoration of my work, like the dog fur texture Richard made by pen.
