Electronic Waste In India
"There's an environmental dark side to this burgeoning consumer culture. "
But because many old electronics are rich in certain metals, like copper and gold, they're too valuable to throw away, especially in a society where the annual median income is still only $1,500
A girl walks past the shells of computer monitors that have been stripped of valuable wire and metals, but which can still bring a small payment from a plastics recycler. Many residents in her village, Sangrampur, are involved in the e-waste trade.
Familes teach children the basics of home-based e-waste recycling in Sangrampur.
Smashed-up circuit boards are a literal gold mine of precious and semiprecious metals. In modern recycling smelters in western Europe, a four-foot-square box of shredded circuit boards can yield thousands of dollars' worth of metals.
