- Private education

- father was jailed due to debts

- works at young age to support his family - freelance reporting

- worked for newspapers

- published 'Oliver Twist' serially in 1837-1839

- married Catherine Hogarth Early Career - first trip to the USA -> 'American Notes'

- his novels influenced the people

- 1849 'David Copperfield' -> significant change in his literary style -> more serious topics

- he and his wife seperated

- public perfomances and readings Fame - rail accident -> mental pressure

- 2nd trip to USA -> promised not to criticise America again

- death: 9th June 1870 Later Years - displays dark sides and social issues of industrial revolution by using dark humor and sarcasm
