Transcript of Using Graphic Novels

Engaging Intruction with Graphic Novels
Odysseus as an Archetype for his Heroic Successors
The Odyssey provides an understanding of what we want our heroes to look like. The Epic Hero of the Odyssey, Odysseus, reflects the values of his culture. Odysseus and other ancient heroes provide the schemata for the creation and analysis of heroism, ethics, and how writers infuse basic humanism into their stories.
Bringing students to the text...
By comparing Odysseus to a contemporary hero, students gain the insight into the conceptual background for developing characters and stories.
Aang the Avatar
As a contemporary hero, Aang the Avatar, embodies many of the same characteristics of Odysseus
Many students are familiar with the Avatar
They are also detached from Classic Literature
The Avatar's story is similarly fantastical as the story of Odysseus
The Last Airbender: Graphic Novel
Provides Parallel Text that guides the students to conceptualizing the creation of a hero
Modernizes the Epic Hero and His Journey
Gives relevance to Odysseus' story
Product: Initial Stages
By using a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the Heroes, students are able to conceptualize Odysseus as an archetype.
