Transcript of Hydrofracking

What it is, and is it really worth it? Hydraulic Fracturing Evaluation Companies should take a further step in ensuring proper handling of fracking fluid.
Companies should reduce the amount of fracturing fluid they use in order to fracture shale
People need to be more informed on what fracturing does to their life and how they can seek assistance. Pumping large amounts of water + smaller amounts of chemicals under high pressure into a gas well to fracture shale, which may potentially hold natural gas (Kershner) (News) (Curtis). What is Hydraulic Fracturing? Granberg – ProPublica Diagram of Fracking Natural gas plants are the cleanest burning fossil fuel power plant.
Generates about only half the carbon dioxide that a conventional coal power plant does (EPA).
Instead of drilling many you can drill just one to frack (Kershner).
Job growth: If the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation lifts ban on fracking it could create 17,600 jobs and accumulate $125 million in tax revenues (Schaefer).
A natural gas well can be fractured up to 18 times (Gasland). Positive Effects of Fracking Water: 3.8 million to 37.9 million liters of water needed for a single fracturing job, depending on depth of well (EarthWorks).
Chemicals: 40,000 different chemicals used in the process (Gasland)
Up to ~1,150 truck trips to drill and finish first frack job (Gasland).
Flowback water removal can be questionable (Gasland)
Documented cases of natural gas leaking into USDW present since May 9, 2011 (Biello) However... Large amounts of land needed for fracturing process (Bateman).
Flaring and venting natural gas in the air generates more pollutants than burning natural gas (Gasland) (EarthWorks).
90% of all natural gas is accessed from fracturing shale (Bateman) source: Conte, Vanity Fair Environmental
More pollution when fracturing natural gas than actually burning it.
Contaminated drinking water leads to reduced quality of life (EarthWorks)
Extreme amounts of chemicals released into the air is harmful for human health and for wildlife (Gasland) (EarthWorks). Potential Effects Misleading advertisements do not inform people of the potential effects of drilling natural gas near residential or agricultural purposes. Works Cited Bateman, Christopher.
