What Do These
SHIFTS
Look
Like in the Classroom?
Do we ask these questions?
What do I want each
teacher
to learn?
How will I know when each
teacher
has learned it?
How will I respond when a
teacher
experiences difficulty in learning?

Instructional leaders plan with these questions in mind as you implement CC.

Does everyone in your building know
and understand the major SHIFTS?

Author's Intent
As a PLC, we ask these questions.
What do we want each
student
to learn?
How will we know when each
student
has learned it?
How will we respond when a
student
experiences difficulty in learning?

The answer to the third question separates learning communities from traditional schools.

Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction

Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in
evidence from text, both literary and informational

Regular practice with complex text and its academic language

How do the
SHIFTS
change what we do?
