Transcript of Advantages and Disadvantages of Friction

Disadvantages
The force of friction acts in the opposite direction that the object is moving, so friction slows down the motion of moving objects.
Friction also produces unnecessary heat. For example, car engines become hotter because of friction.
Disadvantages
Extra friction makes it difficult to move an object, such as sliding a box across the floor or walking in deep snow.
Any device that has moving parts can wear out rapidly because of friction. An example of friction wearing out an object is an eraser.
Friction can create heat energy, but this could overheat and damage an object, such as a car. An example could be a car spinning its wheels so much it causes the tires to smoke.

Advantages
Friction makes many types of motion possible.
If you are walking or running, you use the friction with the ground to move your body forward, to turn left or right, or to stop.
Brakes on a car use friction to stop the vehicles.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Friction
Advantages
Since friction is a resistance force that slows down or prevents motion, it is necessary in many applications to prevent slipping or sliding.
Friction between the sole of a shoe and the surface of the ground prevents us from slipping.
Our furniture does not move because there is friction between the base and the floor surface.
Disadvantages
There are also disadvantages to friction.
