Where was the mummy found and how old is it?
*Juanita, who is also known as the Ice Maiden,was discovered on the top of Mount Ampato near Arequipa, Peru on September 8, 1995 by John Rainhard and his assistant Miguel Zarate.

*The Ice Maiden died about 500 years ago between the age of 12- 14.
What do we know about this mummy?
*We know that the Ice Maiden had died when she was 12-14 years old.
*The mummy is a girl.
*Her religion included some type of gods because there were multiples of other things that were with the Ice Maiden that were offered as sacrifices during that time so she was predicted to be apart of the Inca religion
*Her cause of death was her sacrifice to the gods.
Artifacts found with the mummy
*Other items buried with the mummy included:
cloth-covered offering bundles,
nearly 40 pieces of pottery,
decorated wooden utensils,
weaving tools,
a pair of delicately woven sandals.
*All of the artifacts revealed that gods were important to the Incan culture
Physical features and marks on the mummy
*There was a mark on her skull that shows a club had hit her head and cracked her skull.
*She was alive when this happened because the extreme bleeding would not have happened if she would have been dead.
*When the club hit her, her brain moved to one side of the skull because of the impact it had.
*Her position of death was kneeling down with her head bowed down which could have meant that she was either praying or waiting for the blow to happen.
WHat were other facts were concluded about juanita?
*Other facts included:
She was 14 years old,
She was alive when she was hit in the head,
She was dressed nicely for the offering to the gods,
She died a painful death even though we don't know if it was quick or slow.
What has the mummy revealed about its society?
*The mummy revealed that the gods were extremely important to the Incan culture, so important that they were willing to sacrifice there own people in dangerous mountains to please them.
Technology used to study the mummy
*The technology included:
Advanced CT scans which show the bones in 3D,
DNA tests show the gender and can relate ancestors,
and Carbon Dating which tells how old the mummy is.
What was her real name?
Was she forced to be sacrificed?
Did she chose to be sacrificed?
Did she have a husband?
Did she have have kids or friends?
Who were the other mummies found with her?
Was her family sad or honored to have her sacrificed?
How long did it take her to die?
Did she know how she was going to die?
Was Juanita important to her culture?
