Transcript of UNIT 7 MATTER

MATTER
Everything that takes up space is made up of
matter

What is matter?
Matter
Not matter
Water
Glass
Wood
A Book
A Computer

Feelings
Light
Sound
Thoughts

And air??
Yes, aIR IS MATTER
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
All objects have two properties:
mass and volume
Mass: is the amount of matter in an object. WE MEASURED IN KILOGRAMMES

VOLUME: IS THE AMOUNT OF SPACE AN OBJECT OCCUPIES.We measured in litres
The states of matter
mATTER EXISTS IN THREE STATES:
SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS
Solids
have a fixed shape and a fixed volume
liquids
have a fixed volume , but shape can change
gases
don´t have a fixed shape nor a fixed volume
THE THREE STATES OF WATER
Water is everywhere in nature, in all three states
CHANGES OF STATE
A change of state occurs when substance changes from
one state to another state

a
solid
can be:

strong
: it can support a lot of weight without breaking:EX:ROCK

fragile
: it breaks easily. EX:GLASS

flexible
: it doesn´t break if you bend it:EX PAPER

elastic
: when stretched, it returns to its original shape.EX:RUBBER
properties of liquids
liquids are
fluid
. this means they take the shape of the container they are in. ex: water

some liquids are
viscous
: they don´t flow easily.ex:honey

some liquids are
volatile
: they evaporate easily.ex:perfume
properties of gases
gases don´t have a fixed shape or a fixed volume. gases can expand
PROPERTIES OF SOLIDS
Objects also have other properties
colour

smell

lustre

hardness
Can you help me with examples?
Liquid water
: is found in rivers, lakes, seas and oceans
Solid water
: Solid water is ice and we can find ice in the Poles, on high mountains...
Water in a gaseous state
: is called water vapour, we can find in air.
Melting
: A solid is heated and changes into a liquid.
For example, ice becomes water
EVAPORATION
: A LIQUID IS HEATED AND CHANGES INTO A GAS.
FOR EXAMPLE:WATER BECOMES VAPOUR
solidification
: a liquid is cooled and changes into a solid.
For example liquid water becomes ice
condensation
: a gas cools and changes into a liquid.
for example water vapour becomes water
