Objectives of the Session


An in-depth study undertaken by the student
In a subject listed by the IB
A formal piece of written work of approximately 4,000 words
A required part of the IB Diploma for all students
Internally supervised by an employee of the school

What is the Extended Essay?

What subjects can you choose from?

An opportunity to undertake an in-depth, inter-disciplinary study
of an issue of global significance

Topics could include; climate change, terrorism, energy security, migration, global health, technology and global change

For a topic to be appropriate it must address an issue of global significance and invite an inter-disciplinary approach (i.e. it must be grounded in 2 or more disciplinary perspectives)

What is a World Studies EE?

How does weed infestation in fresh water affect the livelihood of local fisherman in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela? (E-Systems and Economics)

How does baby formula affect the health of infants, and why is it such a popular alternative to mother’s milk in the Philippines and Canada? (Biology and Psychology)

How and why have two Japanese graffiti artists used American hip hop art for the purposes of self-expression and community organization in their country? (Visual Arts and Social and Cultural Anthropology)

World Studies - Examples

Externally graded by IB examiners

Assessed according to published criteria – not in comparison with other students

Counts towards 3 additional diploma points along with Theory of Knowledge

How are you graded?

How do you get started?


What topics have I enjoyed learning about?

What topics do I find interesting or prompt my enthusiasm?

What interests do I have?

What do I want to know?


Once you have these questions you should be able to narrow down to a topic that might be of interest to you

Choice of Topic

do You have an idea?



If you really cannot think of a subject of topic that interests you then choose a topic which will be of use to you within the IB

Select one of your Higher Level subjects and choose a topic of the syllabus

In terms of contents the only limitation IB places on topics is that you cannot do the same topic for both your EE and one of your IAs

But I’m not interested in anything….



Does globalization affect Turkey?

Is there a connection between coffee prices and living standards in Uganda?

What effect does detergent toxicity have on soil bacteria?

What causes cancer?

What would have happened to Germany if Hitler had of won WWII?

To what extent was Germany’s defeat in WWII due to poor leadership?


What’s the difference between a good EE topic and a bad EE topic?


-Answerable in 4,000 words

-An open question (not answerable with yes or no)

-Is focused

-Not trivial in nature

-Fits into one of the IB subjects



What makes a good question?

There is too little data/research or the data/research is inaccessible
Students discover too late that their knowledge of the subject is not deep enough
Poor organization
Failure to keep notes of research
Plagiarism
Over-reliance on web based sources
No contribution by the student (it is simply a summary of other sources)

Where to find more information?

-Start early – this is a big piece of work and requires a significant amount of your time. Do not estimate the amount of time that you need to spend on this.



-Enjoy yourself! Choose a topic that you would like to know more about and enjoy finding out about it!


To choose a subject ask yourself:

What subjects am I studying at HL?
What subjects do I most enjoy studying?
What subjects do I want to study at university?
What subjects do I want to talk about in my university interview?




Once you have an idea of what you would like to study discuss is with the relevant teacher who will be able to tell you whether it is an appropriate topic for an EE

Be prepared that not all topics are appropriate so you may need to start again. The more advice you can get at this stage (friends, IB2s, teachers, family – the better)
