By: Christopher Paul Curtis Setting The story takes place in several cities during the Great Depression in Michigan. Flint Hooverville Owosso The beginning of the story happens in Flint, Michigan. This city is where Bud is at The Home, The Amoses' home, and where plans to find his father. A cardboard jungle. A little of the story takes place here in the outskirts of the city at 2:30 in the morning. Grand Rapids This is the last city that the story takes place at. Bud learns the truth about his family in this city at Grand Calloway Station. Characters Bud (Not Buddy!) Caldwell Bud is the main character of the story.
He is a 10 years-old motherless boy in search of his father, on the puny side (Skinny), and the author of Bud Caldwell's Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself. Bud is Protagonist and Dynamic. Protagonists and Antagonists
Dynamic or Static Bugs Bugs is Bud's best friend from The Home. Like Bud, Bugs is puny and motherless and 10 years-old.Bugs is Protagonist and Static. Lefty Lewis Lefty Lewis is a redcap that helped Bud get to Grand Rapids to find his father. He is Protagonist and Static. The Amoses The Amoses are Bud's foster family. They are Antagonist and Static. Herman E. Calloway Herman E. Calloway is the man Bud believes is his father. He is the leader of Herman E. Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression!!!!!! He is Antagonist and Dynamic. Summary 10-year-old Bud (Not Buddy!) Caldwell is on the lam on the hunt to find his father. One problem: his mom never told him who his father is. But she did leave some clues: flyers showing Herman E. Calloway and his famous bands. So Bud sets out to go to Grand Rapids to meet his accused father.
