Richie D'Ortenzio and Eli Briskin Sound Traveling Through Solids, Liquids, and Gases Mediums Sound Diagram How Sound Travels Sound Traveling Through Liquids Sound travels less fast in liquids due to particles colliding with each other. They are sending sound waves when they do this. This is due to the attractive forces among the particles that are not as strong enough to hold them in a fixed position. Particles slide past each other and some of the sounds energy gets wasted which makes it slower. Sound traveling through gases The traveling of sound depends on the amount of molecular collisions. Sound travels the slowest in gases, particularly air. Because the force of attraction between molecules is the weakest in gases, molecules are spread apart the farthest, making the number of collisions lower.This makes sound travel slower. Sound travels through mechanical waves, which are disturbances. Vibrations cause molecules to collide together, spreading sound. A medium is any form of matter in which sound travels through. We usually hear sound through air. The speed of sound depends on the type of medium it is traveling through. Sound Traveling Through Solids Sound travels fastest through solids because molecules in a solid are closest together. This means that more collisions between molecules are likely to occur, making sound spread more rapidly.
