Suicide and self harm are serious issues. More than 1 million people commit suicide every year (Smith). There are many people who don't know what to do when they're faced with a friend who is self harming or who is suicidal. Most people think all suicidal people self harm as well, which isn't true; 50% of people who self harm have admitted to attempting suicide ("Self-Injury"). Also, some people don't believe people who are suicidal, and they think they're doing it for attention. People don't know that they can call helplines, visit websites, and even just talking to the person helps them. There are many causes, effects, and ways to prevent suicide and self harm.
How can we solve problems in our world?
How can Suicide and Self Harm be avoided, and/or resolved?
What are the effects of Suicide and Self Harm and how can we prevent it?
Self harm and suicide are very diverse topics, however, they have multiple similarities. For example, when a person makes a failed attempt at suicide, it is actually considered self harm, in the military. Also, both suicide and self harm are immensely damaging to a person's mind and body. Self harm, as well as suicide, can take on many forms, some more extravagant than others, in many cases, leaving visible evidence. An example of this is cutting. Sometimes, self harm can turn into suicide. For instance, a person may go above their intentions, resulting in the accidental end of their life. Self harm is also quite common. Four out of six students admit to committing self harm in one form or another (“Self-Injury: Problems and Solutions"). Therefore, self harm and suicide only have a few major differences that set a clear line between the two; one of which being: suicide is the event in which a form of self harm claims the life of a loved one.
There are many causes of suicide and self harm.
There are many different opinions on the topics of suicide and self harm, each depending on the individual's life experience. The two most common opinions are that suicide and self harm are different, and that they are very similar. There are many causes, effects, and prevention methods of suicide and self harm. Many people don't know what to do when they face the situation of suicide and self harm in friends, family, or even with themselves. Although there are many ways to help, and some are better than others, anything is helpful. Even if it's just an attempt, some help is better than no help at all. A very helpful way to keep somebody from committing suicide is simply talking to them and make sure they know they are loved and that people will miss them when they're gone. Things will get better eventually. Even showing up to their house and talking to them can save someone's life in time of need. The best method to help somebody who is self harming is to make sure they know they're loved, and that there are other solutions. No matter how mad the world may be, everyone is loved and belongs here. Now. Forever. Always.
More people than you think have been, or are being abused. Whether it's by their parents, siblings, or partners, abuse is a problem.
Some people may feel lonely or neglected because of being pushed away or left out.
Some people don't even want to know how to help, however, because they think that suicidal people are only saying they're suicidal to get attention, which is rarely the case. Other people panic when they're told someone is suicidal. NOPCAS offers "training sessions" for people who know suicidal people, and want to know what to do. Also, the AFSP offers resources for people going through these situations.
How Can We Prevent Self Harm?
Like most other problems in the world, self harm can be prevented. Half of the time, people who commit, or attempt, suicide have also committed self harm before they attempted to end their life. Therefore, self harm and suicide must have similar solutions, since they also have similar motives. Those who are affected by these issues can call hot lines, and they can always seek counseling. However, many people need to know they are loved and cared for by their friends and family and know that they are appreciated. Therefore the best way to prevent self harm is to be there for those in need.
All causes of suicide and self harm are very cruel and hurtful to the people experiencing them and can make them feel worthless. It's not right to put people down because of their differences. One way we can start preventing suicide and self harm is by not being unkind to people because of your personal opinion- keep it to yourself!
People can become stressed from many things in their daily lives. Such as a busy schedule, school assignments, and work overload. A little stress doesn't hurt, but when a person becomes over stressed, it can often lead to them feeling confused, aggravated, or even self worthless, all depending on the situation, and the intensity, as well as the person. ("Self-Harm")
One cause of suicide and self harm in today's society is bullying. Students, adults, and people in general are bullied every day. About thirty percent of students in the United States are involved in bullying on a regular basis either as a victim, bully, or both (Naaas.org). We all know what bullying is, and we've all experienced seeing it, now we just have to work together to stop it.

Other good things to talk about include reasons that they shouldn't commit suicide, who would miss them when they're gone, and all the things that make their life good.
Though all these are all good methods to keep someone alive, the most common and most effective is talking to the person, listening to what they have to say, and giving them reasons to stay.

There are many ways to prevent suicidal friends, family members, and even strangers. There are several organizations that offer help to people thinking about suicide, such as NOPCAS (National Organization for People of Color Against Suicide) and AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). However, there really aren't many resources for people trying to help people they know. If people knew what to do in the situation where a friend needs help, then there would most likely be a lot less suicides.
Another really good resource is the National suicide helpline in the U.S. The number for that is 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Not only people thinking about ending their life can call that number, but so can people who are friends, or family members of that person. The most common, most effective way to get somebody not to commit suicide is to talk to them. People should just calmly (but persuasively) talk to the person, giving them things to look forward to in the future, for example, getting their drivers license, graduating, going to college, or even their next birthday.
