Typically, most people for relationships with those in their immediate area. These people are called availables.

From there, individuals select potential partners from the group of availables. These people are called eligibles.







Online dating changes this.
Online dating and physical materiality
With online dating sites, proximity is less of an issue. These sites can bring together people who live thousands of miles apart.


My foray into online dating
Even though Brandon and I only live 10 miles apart, we likely wouldn't have met because we don't have overlapping careers or hobbies.

And yet, 7 months later...

Dating sites provide access to more potential partners than do traditional dating methods, but the act of browsing and comparing large numbers of profiles can lead individuals to commoditize potential partners and can reduce their willingness to commit to any one person.

The meaning of dating changed
a) “real dating” is associated with expectations of commitment and a long-term relationship

However, it can also bring together people who live close to one another.
