Transcript of Mem Fox Presentation

Her first book, Possum Magic, is the best selling children's book in Australia, with sales of over four million. Mem Fox Growing Up Reading Aloud Born in Melbourne, Australia in March 1946 She left Australia at the age of six to go to Africa with her parents who were missionaries. Schooling "The more expressively we read, the more fantastic the experience will be. The more our kids love books, the more they'll pretend to read them, and the more they pretend to read, the more quickly they'll learn to read. So reading aloud is not quite enough- we need to read aloud well." "The ups and downs of our voices and our pauses and points of emphasis are like music, literally, to the ears of young children, and they love music. Simple tunes also make anything easier to remember, so it's useful to read a book in exactly the same way every time, and to read the same book over and over again. The more quickly children pick up the "tune" of our words, the more they'll remember the words and have fun trying to 'read' the story themselves, with the same experession as we do." Father's name is Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge- also the title of her second book. Miss Nancy, in the same book, is her mother. Where is Mem Now? Mem currently lives in Adelaide, South Australia with her husband, Malcolm. Mem Fox is Australia's most highly regarded picture-book author. Mem has written over 35 picture books for children and 5 non-fiction books for adults, including the best-selling Reading Magic, aimed at parents of very young children. Accomplishments After growing up in Africa, she moved to London in the mid-sixties and attended Drama school for three years. In 1969 she married an Englishman- a highly gifted teacher of Frech and drama. Malcolm and Mem have been married for 42 years, have a daughter Chloe and a new grandson, Theo. In 1981 she moved out of drama and into literacy studies, to find out how children best learn to read and write. Literacy has become the great focus of Mem's life- it's her passion, battle, mission, and her exhaustion. She has received many civic awards, honors, and accolades in Australia, including two honorary doctorates. She has visited the United States over 100 times, mostly in her role as a literary expert although she is also a well-known author in America. Writing is her second love, teaching is her first, to which she admits an addiction so powerful that she is surprised she was able to retire early from her position as Associate Professor of Literary Studies, in the School of Education at Flinders University, South Australia. She now spends most of her time writing presentations urging parents, teachers, and other to read aloud to children ages 0-5, and she travels the world doing it. References:
