In October 2014 Ontario Shores became the first hospital in Canada and the first mental health hospital in the world to receive the prestigious HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 award. This designation is awarded to healthcare organizations for having a completely paperless health information system which advances the use of patient data to ultimately improve process and performance.

The following are initiatives within the organization that led to our journey to Stage 7 and also helped us achieve our quality and financial improvement goals.

Hope.

During a review of contracts, we reviewed expenses in labs and discovered that a number of expensive Broad Spectrum Drug Screens were being ordered when the Drug of Abuse Screen test suited clinical needs.

Supports were built within the system to improve use and guide ordering of the most appropriate test.

QUERY LINKS
Query links cannot reflex order sets. Instead, we designed CPGs using a dummy order with attached reflex sets. Both order sets and reflex sets have been built to mirror each other.

In this example, we used a dummy order.

Dummy orders are are prefixed with "_XXXX" to ensure that they do not appear when users are searching for orders.
Quality Improvement using
Dashboards
Compared to the hospital
When reviewing the workflow of our Infection Prevention and Control team, we identified the need to provide a means to support a hospital wide surveillance of potential infections and transmissions of hospital infections.

Go Live implementation was in Aug of 2014.
Electronic Syndromic Surveillance
After Go Live, Ontario Shores opened a new unit and hosted displaced nursing home residents due to a fire.
