Chinese Cuisine Sweet and Sour Pork or Chicken Popular Dishes Sweet and sour pork has a bright orange-red color, and a delicious sweet and sour taste. At the very beginning there was only sweet and sour pork, but to meet demands, there have been some developments on this dish. Now, the pork can be substituted by other ingredients like chicken, beef or pork ribs. Ma Po Tofu One of the most famous dishes in Chuan Cuisine with a history of more than 100 years. Ma describes a spicy and hot taste which comes from pepper powder, one kind of condiment usually used in Chuan Cuisine. The milky tofu is enriched with brownish red ground beef and chopped green onion. Wontons Since the Tang Dynasty (618–907), it has been a custom for people to eat wontons on the winter solstice (in solar terms the longest day, which always occurs on December 21 or 22). The most versatile shape of a wonton is a simple right triangle. Wontons are commonly boiled and served in soup or sometimes deep-fried. The filling of wontons can be minced pork or diced shrimp. Rice. Chinas Staple Food. Noodles. Tofu. Mooncakes Chinese Deserts One of the most well-known Chinese desserts. Mooncakes are only eaten during the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Mooncakes are pastries filled with a paste on the inside and sometimes a salted egg yolk. Common fillings include lotus seed paste and sweet bean pastes such as red bean paste. The most common type of crust is chewy. Grass Jelly Another popular Chinese dessert that's relatively inexpensive. They are often sold in supermarkets throughout Chinese communities. The jelly is not related to grass in any way.
The jelly is a black color and often enjoyed in the summer because it is thought to have "cooling" properties. It's just a Chinese belief that has to do with the balance of the body. The jelly has a slightly bitter taste, so it's usually served with sugar syrup (the most common), fruits, or evaporated milk. Tong Sui Literally translated as "sugar water", is probably the closest to dessert that Chinese sweets can be. Most Chinese restaurants in America will serve either sliced fruit or bowls of tong sui at the end of a meal. Tong Sui isn't actually sugar water; it's more of a warm soup. Legend has it that Yan Di (Ancient Chinese ruler) was being poisoned by some herb he had ingested; and a drop of water from a tea tree dripped into his mouth and he was saved. For a long time, tea was used as an herbal medicine. During the Western Zhou Dynasty tea was a religious offering. History of Chinese Tea In Chinese weddings the bride and groom serve tea to their parents as a sign of thanks. Symbolism of Tea Tea is a symbol of respect in a household. Tea is an apology; people pour tea for the person they are apologizing too. Tea is used as herbal medicine. Uses of Tea Tea is always served while socializing. Tea Facts Tea is what wine and coffee is to americans and europeans. Water is known as the "Mother of Tea." Pouring tea is an art. Popular Dishes Continued ... Chow Mein
This stir fried dish consists of noodles, meat (usually chicken, beef, shrimp, or pork), onions and celery. "Chow Mein" means stir fried noodles. Dumplings With a long history of more than 1,800 years, dumplings are a traditional food widely popular in China, especially in North China. They generally consist of minced meat and finely chopped vegetables. Dumplings are the symbol of Chinese food, and a traditional dish eaten on New Year's Eve. In China, a person who drinks tea is considered to be one who enjoys the finer things in life. Many centuries ago, drinking tea was a way of displaying your social status. You measured someone's wealth by their knowledge of tea. Food Symbolism Noodles- Symbolizes long life. Youngsters and seniors all will have a bowl of Long Life Noodles in expectation of a healthy life.
Eggs- Hard boiled eggs symbolizes fertility. Egg rolls or spring rolls symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and is served on New Year.
Seeds- Seeds symbolizes good wishes under special circumstances.
Chicken- Chicken is served at Chinese New Year to bring good marriage and coming together of families. Random Facts In the earlier times, it was considered inappropriate to use forks and knives for eating as these instruments were used as weapons. Therefore, most of the food was prepared in bite sizes.
When talking about authentic Chinese food, you should definitely be aware of the fact that when the Chinese say "fragrant meat", they always refer to dog meat! The term is commonly used in all parts of China.
