This story describes the life of four women who immigrate to the United States to begin a better life.
They overcome tragedies and hardships by developing connections of love.

Story of An- Mei

"She would rather kill her own weak spirit so she could give me a stronger one"(271)
This illustrates how she sacrificed her own life to give her daughter better opportunities

This story describes the life of two Afghan women, Laila and Mariam, who are married to the same man.
As a result of their brutal circumstance in the marriage, Mariam and Laila develop a bond of love and friendship.
The moment Laila saves Mariam from a beating their connection begins.

Laila grows in her love for her child and becomes stronger as a result
"Laila already saw the sacrifices a mother had to make, virtue was only the first" (196)

Greatest act of sacrifice
Rasheed makes an attempt on Laila's life, but Mariam saves her by hitting Rasheed with a shovel, killing him.
She goes to jail and sacrifices her life so that Laila can begin to lead a joyful existence away from pain. By putting Laila's life before her own she exemplifies the strong and undying love that the wives have formed.
"She was leaving the world as a woman who had loved and been love back... This was a legitimate end to a life of illegitimate beginnings." (329)
Les Miserables describes a time of war and rebellion in France. It follows the life of Jean Valjean and the people associated with him.
There are multiple characters in this novel who face tragic circumstances and are able to strengthen their ability to love as a result.
The sacrifice of Fantine
Fantine is a character who shows honest and genuine unconditional love, despite her situation.
She is driven into prostitution in order to provide for her daughter and
"She has endured all, borne all, experienced all, suffered all, lost all, wept for all."(67)
This describes the difficulties she has withstood all for the benefit of her child. She is able to show her level of unconditional love through her actions and sacrifices.
Jean Valjean's ability of love
Valjean grows in his ability to love as a result of the affection of Fantine's daughter Cosette, that he adopts.
"Cosette evoked the dawn of love" (183)
Despite the hardships that he has experienced his hardened soul becomes soft and kind and he is able to love deeply.
The love of Cosette gives Valjean hope and strength to live a life of vitality "Love came, and he again grew strong". (186)
Eponine is yet another character who experiences great adversity. She is raised in an unloving environment, however develops a love for Marius
This love for Marius leads her to commit a selfless and heroic act, her desire motivates her to save his life, while sacrificing her own, "A hand was laid upon the muzzle of the musket, and stopped it"(449)
The Secret Life of Bees is a story about a young girl Lily, who runs away in hopes of discovering her deceased mother's past.
Lily is faced with many obstacles and is able to overcome them through love and companionship.
The nurturing environment of August and her sisters help Lily come to terms with her hardships which allow her to learn to love and grow in their community.
"I want you to know, I love you." (243)
This exemplifies the positive atmosphere that strengthens Lily's love
Sacrifices portray the pure love many characters exhibit, despite their challenges. These challenges in turn, help the characters grow and strengthen their ability to love.
These novels exemplify how loving relationships can blossom out of numerous tragic and difficult circumstances.
