Transcript of Land & Soil

Land & Soil
Oil and Mining Companies
Major Oil and Mining Companies cut burn and clear to set up their huge opencast mining venture
they bleed the earth of its natural resources and leave behind total devastation such as toxic waste in the soil & a totally collapsed eco-system
Farming

Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses
Land Conservation Saves Limited Resources By helping individuals protect community resources that come from the land – water, food security, wildlife, and places for recreation and reflection

farmlands become replaced with buildings and roads.
Tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, & volcanic eruption can wipe out a whole town, city or more. Houses are damaged
Physical destruction
Trees and plants are killed which means new plants will have to be regrown. land is destroyed
these natural disasters often permanently alter an areas landscape, leading in some cases to the destruction of local species & many deaths
MOST BRUTAL Natural Disasters
Deforestation
deforestation is a contributor to
global warming
it's responsible for 20% of world greenhouse gas emissions”
also known to cause the extinction of many species
water cycle
is affected by deforestation
increases rates of soil erosion
“The world’s rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation.
Pros
Livestock
cotton and tobacco
fruit and vegetables
Bio diesel fuel

con
fertilizers and pesticides
* The slightest rainfall can cause these pesticides to runoff and get into our rivers and lakes, or sink into our groundwater
create pollution
soil erosion
scything and steeping
modern ultra-scale farming: pesticides
Deforestation is the clearing of earth’s forests for human benefit
Agricultural needs call for deforestation for the use of land
Loggers use deforestation for wood and paper resources
Forests are also cut as a result of growing urban sprawl
Natural disasters
Problems that impact land & soil
Agri-business
Industrial logging
Mining for metals
Road Building
Hydroelectric dams
Importance of soil

Besides supporting the growth of plants, soil plays other life sustaining roles Soil helps purify/ clean water
Decomposers in soil also help recycle nutrients
In addition, soil provides a home for a variety of living things
LAND
We can conserve our land resources by planting trees, not throwing garbage anywhere, and try to avoid pollutions
Soil
Soil conservation is very important
Crop rotation is the practice of planting different crops on the same field in different years or growing seasons
Plant a rain garden
Restore wetlands.
