Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh and Gauguin met in Paris in November of 1887. Van Gogh had organized an art exhibit from those who Van Gogh called the Impressionists of the Petit Boulevard

On February 1888 Vincent van Gogh decided to move to the little town of Arles in Southern France to began painting in what he called his studio the studio of the South. His plain for this studio was to bring other artists together so that they could share there opinions and there also could inspire other artists. As we all know van gogh always had the support of his brother Theo on his side he was going to help van gogh and the other artists sell there paintings as much as he could. Van Gogh rent four bedrooms out of the yellow house in May for his studio of the South.

On December 23, 1888 Van Gogh, in a fit of insanity, pursued Gauguin with a knife and threatened him intensely. Later on that day van Gogh returned to their house and cut of the bottom of his ear lobe and gave it to Gauguin for a gift, needless to say Gauguin left Arles and headed off to Paris.

Not long after that the people of Arles got van Gogh put into a hospital to get some help.
