Corporations trade amongst themselves on the web without any threat to their privacy
web browser

limited input functionalities e.g. cookies & forms
because users do not have a 'back-end' server
e.g. password managers, photo synchronisation - all third party services we cannot do ourselves
In comparison, we have more freedom in physical lives
Even if the land helped us do more, we actually have less freedom - and its not just because of the mud
But not on the Internet.
On the Internet, the platform dictates its terms of engagement e.g. how we interact on Facebook, Instagram, how we use a web browser etc.
In physical lives, we subscribe to goods/services only when we need it e.g. governments provide some goods and services
Freedom to move, interact, engage, exchange without having to get onto a platform e.g. meet a friend at the park and taking her dog for a walk does not require a platform rule or script
As long as we do not have our own platform, and we can only get onto the Internet with existing (muddy) platforms, we do not have the right to dictate the terms of engagement.

The Internet also privileges corporations as a participant principally because corporations have spent more than 20 years in ICT and have integrated all their information seamlessly with the Internet
So how do we get more freedom for individuals on the Internet?
What if we gave the HAT the ability to securely store personal data, in a
private space
on the Internet?

.......
individuals can finally start to have inventory and data repository for themselves
What if we gave individuals a hyperdata browser - the ability to browse their own data, create mashups, organise, visualise and control their data on the HAT?

.......
they will start to have power to process their own information so that it can be meaningful to them
What if we gave individuals the ability to acquire their own data from the Internet into their HATs?

.......
they can start to ask for their own data back and give corporations choices in the way personal data is stored or accessed
What if we gave individuals the ability to exchange their content and data straight from their own HAT

.......
they will begin to have different interactions and relationships with corporations... and with one another..
What if we gave the code for the HAT away, as open sourced, together with the code for the hyperdata browser, so that anyone can build it.

.......
we will create competition on who can build it better and there will be choices of HAT providers for everyone

Trade privately

so the market on the Internet has become over specialized - creating hyperspecialization -
there is a service for everything
- (from password managers to photo synchronization) ... all sitting on the existing platforms controlled by others
Why can't we have more freedom to do digital stuff ourselves?

.....because individuals do not have our own platform to get onto the Internet.

And rather than building one for us, its easier to sell you additional services on existing platforms...

........yes, the muddy kind.
We built the HAT....... http://hubofallthings.com

raised some money on indiegogo and created a community of like-minded people as well!
Both corporations and individuals have their private spaces to process data and information

Both corporations and individuals can trade and exchange publicly and privately
http://hatcommunity.org/
Individuals finally get their own personal data platform and private space on the Internet, with the tools to help them use and control personal data and content
Nudge by location and time
Nudges & prompts
Welcome to the HAT story
Join us by getting a HAT for yourself and be part of the story to change the Internet
nothing is free, so firms either take our money, or our data on these platforms

... and its such good business, its better not to change anything
What if we build the platform for individuals? How would it look like?

And what should we call it?

... maybe we should call it the HAT, for hub-of-all-things, because people should be at the hub of all things?
But because we are individuals, a platform for us can't be like corporations. Our supply chains, inventories, data, lifestyles would require a different way of organising data and information that have to suit us as individuals.

Building a platform for an individual is hard.....
Without a platform on the Internet, we also do not have a private space on the Internet where we can have an information processing system to do things for ourselves.
For example
In short, unlike the physical world, we do not have freedom of property in the digital world
And what if we design and create an entire ecosystem with private/public spaces on the Internet to share and exchange data amongst ourselves between HATs? What if we rebuilt some of the Internet services to show how it's done?

The Internet dictates the terms of engagement because we cannot be on the Internet without using
a platform
- whether its Email, Facebook or Instagram.
And all existing platforms are controlled by organizations.

Hence the mud.

They didn't intend the land to be muddy... it just was

In physical lives, individuals have freedom of
property
- by owning stuff, we are free to use it to make our lives better (positive liberty), without being constrained by a platform and its rules
to start owning some digital property so that we can use it to make ourselves better

we need a personal data platform for ourselves, owned by us, and private to us - the way all corporations currently have
to start being able to have tools and means to do things for ourselves and for one another
to have a better way of interacting with corporations on the Internet
to rebalance the Internet so that it is more individual centric rather than only corporation centric
instead of having constant battles on privacy and the way corporations handle our personal data on the
existing platforms

..... i.e. instead of just tackling the mud
my 'siri' browses my history & helps me diet
What if we gave the platform the ability to buy services to use, visualise and process their information on the HAT?

.......
they can buy new information services to augment their own capabilities ... in particular recall, decision making, computation, intelligence and assistance
I can match my wardrobe with the latest sale items
I can search my past!
we would give individuals the freedom of their own digital property, a personal data platform with their own terms of engagement.

...
and we could change the Internet
After 3 years, with 6 universities in the UK, £1.7m worth of grant funding, together with community startup funding, and a group of passionate researchers and entrepreneurs, we did just that.......
http://www.hatdex.org/
thank you!
And best of all, its good for the digital economy because, as a personal data platform, services can be built on the HAT (the way they are built on Facebook and Google) that will reinforce this equitable relationship

and we created MarketSquare™ - a public space so that we can catalyse interactions with corporations and with other individuals in this new world, to show how its done
the internet is VERY corporation-centric!
Physical lives
The Internet is starting to look more balanced now

In the future, when technology evolves to have greater intelligence, search, match and analytic capabilities around personal data, you may be able to buy the technology,
but you cannot buy your own history.

Rumpel also helps individuals accumulate their data repository on the HAT for the future
we can't search our history and all our personal data available on the Internet to tell us more about ourselves

... which could really help our health and wellbeing
we can't match what we have to what we buy
We don't have the proper database system for our own digital lives to store our own personal data and content
we don't even own much of our own personal data
There was a land called the Internet
...it was a good land - it allowed people to walk every where
We were able to do so much on this land of of Internet
book services, educate ourselves, connect devices, find boyfriends/girlfriends, socialise, share, read news, learn......
the only problem was, the land is always muddy
And the muddy land made shoes (personal data) stick to the mud
in some cases, the shoes were completely ripped off!
academics, practitioners, policy makers came from far and wide to discuss what to do with this
Some suggested different shoe materials, some suggested different shoes
I would like to start the story with a metaphor on the Internet
But why don't we ask the real question? Why can't we have a different kind of surface? One that didn't make shoes stick?
But because we like this land, we have to deal with the mud.

It was mud or nothing
Corporations provide some goods and services
The rest of the time, we provide ourselves some goods and services (e.g. cook dinner, wash dishes, exercise, read)
why are we surprised we are in a mud crisis?
To create a better 'surface'!
The future of the Internet-of-Things is upon us

We cannot continue with the existing platforms alone... we need more choices

We have to start creating a new personal platforms
but... that would mean a different platform - maybe one that is owned by us?
#talktotheHAT
your platform or mine?
let's talk about privacy.... yours
We created a private space for individuals on the Internet where you can have your HAT, the hyperdata browser Rumpel , and for companies to build services on it.

And a personal HAT address (PHATA) and front page for your HAT
