Nian is afraid of fire, loud noise, and the color red. Traditionally, red banners would be hung on houses to keep away Nian. Loud noises such as the banging of pots and pans where also used to keep Nian away.
Fish, dumplings, spring rolls, and niangao are the most common Chinese New Year foods.
