History of the Canadian Astonaut Corps

The Canadian Astronaut Program was established under the management of the National Research Council Canada in 1983, when the United States invited Canada to fly an astronaut on the Space Shuttle . This invitaion led to the birth of a permanent corps of Canadian astronauts to coordinate and conduct Canadian experiments in space. In the same year, in response to the first call for Canadian astronauts, 6 individuals, were chosen out of 4,000 applications, based on their outstanding academic backgrounds, professional experience, health, and communication skills.

In 1989, the Candian Space Agency (CSA) was established as an independent government agency to deal with all Canadian matters relating to space, including space exploration, remote sensing, and satellite communications.

In 1992, the Space Agency announced that it would recruit four m individuals to undergo astronaut training, in which 5,000 applied.

Now lets learn about some of those important individuals in the Space Program.

Dave Williams

Dave Williams first flew on the space shuttle on April 17 1998, where he participated in Neurolab, a 16- day mission aboard Columbia. This mission was dedicated to the advancement of neuroscience research, directing its attention to the nervous systems. As a member of Endeavours crew in 2007, Williams made three spacewalks during a 12-day mission, the most by a Canadian. During that time, spent nearly 18 hours outside in space assembling the ISS, breaking the previous Canadian mark by his colleague Chris Hadfield.

Williams retired from the CSA in 2008 and became director of the McMaster Centre for Medical Robotics at the St. Joseph's Healthcare facility in Hamilton, Ont.
