•Bobby's Mom - She try's to tell Bobby's dad to not let him go to Rumsum Lake for the summer because she knows hes going to get made fun of and doesn't want him to get hurt.
•Bobby's Dad - He wants Bobby to lose weight because he is very strong and believes that he can stand up for himself instead of Joanie . Also he wants bobby to go to Rumsum Lake lake for the summer to that.

Bobbies mom gives him the news that he was going to Lake Rumson for the summer to at least earn a dime by mowing lawns. once he was there he met this girl named Joanie. he liked her because she got made fun of too. so he thought they were the perfect match. So one day Bobby and Joanie are hanging out at the beach. They go up to Pete Marino. Pete asks them if they want to play a game and see if they can win a prize. The game is, you pick a number and spin a wheel and if the wheel lands on your number you win. Joanie picks the number 14 because she says that her lucky number is her age. The spinner lands on 14. Bobby and her pick out a giant stuffed teddy bear. Pete asks them if they will carry it around for a while to show people that you can win at the game and get more people to play. They do. So they go and sit down and eat. Then Joanie tells Bobby she has some news. She says that she has to move to New York. Bobby asks her why but she wont tell him. Joanie's parents come and they leave without saying hi to Bobby.
•Joanie - she is Bobby Mark's best and only friend. She always sticks up for Bobby no matter what even though she also gets made fun of by the same bullies because she has a big nose. so basically she sticks up for her self too.
This book was ok but then again it was kind of stupid. some parts were really predictable and weren't that exciting, but then again it was a pretty old book so that kind of explains it. The part I liked was when they were describing Bobby in the book because they said he had thick legs, a wobbly backside, a big belly, and soft skin.
Three weeks later Joanie returns surprisingly never tells Bobby why she went there. Anyway after a summer of mowing lawns Bobby has slimmed down and does not get made fun of anymore. At the beginning of the summer Bobby said that " I hate summers. There not fun when your fat and you have to take you shirt of when you swim." But now Bobby says "I like the summer. All the seasons are terrific."
Bobby has begged his parents to come back home and they finally said yes because of the local bully around the lake. So in replacement he has to find a job. So he goes to Rumson Lake and looks by the pay phone. There, there are lots of jobs for the summer people can do. He saw a job to mow a lawn and do lawn work please call Dr. Khan. So Bobby says to himself " This will be a small yard and not a lot of mowing to do at all" So he calls the number and Dr. Khan answers on the second ring. He tells Bobby to be there 9 o'clock sharp in the morning. The next day Bobby shows up and is surprised to see that it is a "Huge" yard. Nothing like he thought. He sees Dr. Khan and he immediately tells him that he pays top dollar but if you cant to the work than you do not get paid top dollar. He starts him off at 1 dollar an Hour. (Which back in 1942 is not bad and is better than nothing.) Dr. Khan tells Bobby to go and get the lawn mower out of the shed. Bobby quietly says to himself " Ive never used a gas powered mower before." He gets it out of the shed and just stands there. Dr. Khan comes up and puts the gas in for him and also starts it. Bobby starts to mow and is five minutes in and can not go any farther since he is 14 and 200 pounds. He has blisters on his hands. Yet he doesn't stop he thinks that " If you think that the lawn is you enemy and every row you mow you conquer your enemy" it will go faster. And finally it ends.
Joanie catches up with bobby before she leave to New York. So Bobby and Joanie are hanging out at the beach again owned by Pete Marino. Then the local bully walks in. Willie Rumson. Willie Rumson saw the walking around and goes up to them. He starts to make fun of them and says"Your still lugging around with that big nose freak fats" Bobby starts to walk away yet Willie grabs his shoulder and turns him around. Right before he can punch Bobby in the face Pete walks up and pushes Willie away from Bobby. Pete is a tough and very strong man and when he tells someone to do something they do it. For example, when Pete pushed Willie away he told him and his little gang to leave. And said " Its a free country" and Willie replies " Ya and remember who is fighting for it." Yet Willie has never fought it a war.
•Willie Rumson - He is a local bully. He makes fun of Bobby because he is fat and he makes fun of Joanie because she has a big nose. he just makes fun of people for the fun of it and wants to make people feel bad about them selves. He is also a Marine.
•Pete Marino - Owns the Rumson Lake and Beach. he is an excellent swimmer and also strong and athletic. he is out to get bobby because bobby took the job that he had(mowing lawns) and because bobbies family now owns the lake.
