Natural Selection

Fat tail, and light weight are good traits to have if your a beaver. Other beavers long ago were big and fat and natural selection gave us the beaver we have today.

Evolution of North American Beaver

ecological factors

environmental factors

Geologic time

The beaver makes habittas for other species to live in. Such as the North Cricket frog or the crane. They have also affected trees after many years of cutting down a certain tree species in a area some trees will have more chemicals in them when they regrow to be toxic to the beaver so the beaver does no fall them.

The fioldest ancestor of the North american Beaver is found at 2.5 million years old. Wich would make it in the Mezoic era and it was in the terasic period.

Beavers like to cut down trees to make wet lands that many other species can use as a habitat. To humans taking down trees may look bad but the beaver actually helps many species. The beaver can even help remove pollutants from the water ways.

Future

I think what will lead the the extension of my species is humans trying to kill the beaver for causing destruction of human property or forest habitats.

Forces of evolution

There have been nor record of mutation or genetic drift. But there has been some gene flow such as the fat tail and the large teeth and the webbed feet.

ancestors

The Ancient Giant Beaver, (Castoroides leiseyorum) was a giant ancestor of the North American Beaver, that is apart of the rodent family that lived over 2.5 million years ago. This Beaver was incredibly large, about 2.5 meters in length and 60 to 100 kilograms.

Fossil records do show that this is a ancestor of the North American Beaver because the fossils have only been found in North America.
