Biotic Factors

Ecosystem Services

  • The global climate stores greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane
  • Alaskan natives use the meat, woolen fur, and hides of the musk oxen and caribou
  • The open space offers habitat for migrating animals like birds, polar bears, and caribou
  • Oil, coal, and natural gas can be found under the Earth's crust in this area
  • Stores fresh water as ice and in the snowpack yearlong

Our biome is the arctic tundra. It's terrestrial (land) and it's in the polar zone. It has a cold climate and short growing seasons.

Location

An abiotic factor is a non-living part of an environment that affects living organisms and the ecosystem.

Some of the abiotic components of our ecoscenario are:

  • the polar climate
  • high winds
  • snow
  • little rain (15-25 cm per year)
  • water (many streams)

Fun Facts

A biotic factor is a living organism or product of an organism that affects the population of another organism.

In our ecoscenario's community, there are many populations such as polar bears, musk ox, arctic foxes, wolves, snowy owls, snowshoe hares, alpine azalea, arctic willow, and Labrador tea. The individual species that are seen around the most are musk ox, caribou and reindeer lichen (which is also the main food for caribou.)

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is located in the northeast corner of Alaska. It's at the border of Canada and Alaska. To the north is the Arctic Ocean. It's far from the equator.

  • The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge covers 7,700,000 hectares (19 million acres)
  • People have been debating whether the coastal plain should be developed for oil and gas drilling for nearly 40 years
  • The growing season is only 50-60 days
  • Snow can benefit plants and animals because of it's insulating qualities
