How maltreatment effects children

  • Pregnancy and birth- atmosphere attitude expectations surrounding the conception of the baby are the first factors that influence the potential bonding experience
  • Birth to 1 year- depends on the relationship with baby and mother
  • 1-4 years- poorly parented baby's shows little interest toys or exploration in general the child mirrors what he sees in others children demonstrate no emotion
  • 4-8 years- developmental delays continues to be obvious in the child between 4 and 8 the period showed be learning with abuse and neglect
  • 8-12 years- abuse or neglect child parents have difficulty in nurturing is probably well established as the nurturer by now the child assumes roles of caring for the younger siblings and caters to the parents

  • David- the reason it is important to understand different family cultural is because if and individual has to experience councilor the psychologist would have to understand the value and morals of the cultural background
  • Yolanda- it is important so you can understand the thinking of the person. And so if your giving advice it wont go against their upbringing and their religion. Also its important so you wont judge them for their choices.
  • Rosie-Without understanding the differences, It would be very hard to know how to treat an individual .

  • Books Definition- A group consisting of parents and children living in a household
  • Rosie-individuals with a bond to each other
  • Yolanda- A family is not only two parents in a household it could be one parent that takes care of the children and takes on the responsibility of raising the children
  • David- a family is an individual that looks out for one another and able to talk to know matter the topic

African American Family- rely heavenly on mutual aid on those beyond the nuclear family structure

Hispanic family- many hispanic families are more likely to be living as single parent family than the general population

Native American Tribes- customs are based on century of cultural from previous ancestor

Nuclear, An Extended Family Blended Single Parent Communal and Cohabitant

Describe problems that dysfunctional family are unable to face

Nuclear- mother father and children

Extended Family- parents and children often living with grandparents or adult sibling

Blended- husband and wife care for children from their previous marriages and perhaps their children from their present marriage.

Single Parent-single parent raise the child alone

Cohabitant- two people living together without legal sanction and caring for children, this is practice widely today, and gay and lesbian family

Communal- join several adults and their various offspring in one living arrangement
