It seems that Edmund has more power because of all he has managedto achieve. He has cheated and tricked his way to the top. Edmund orders and controls everything. He also has two women madly in love with him.
Goneril and Regan's division is furthered by their love for Edmund. They both want to be with him and confess that he proclaimed love for both of them. But, as it appears Edmund loves Regan and Goneril becomes Jelous of her for that reason.
Edgar agrees to fight Edmund under the circumstanes that he remains in disguise
Albany is the son and law and husband to Goneril as well as the duke of Albany thus giving him more power than Edmund and in the fight against the french armies he commands the troops which gives him the authority. Albany also has power of Edmund because of the fact that Edmund is a bastard son of Gloucester.
Albany even refers to Edmund as a "Half-blooded
fellow"(5.3.82)
When the Herald asks for Edmund's identity he says, "Know, my name is lost; / By treason's tooth bare-gnawn, and canker-bit: / Yet I am noble as the adversary / I come to cope" (5.3.121-124).
Edmund justifies and reconciles himself from his fall from grace by acknowledging that he is dying and therefore wants to get rid of his guilt. Edmund asks for the identity of his killer to let him know whoever killed him is forgiven as revealed by Edmund,
What you have charg’d me with, that have I done,
And more, much more; the time will bring it out:
'Tis past, and so am I. But what art thou
That hast this fortune on me? If thou'rt noble,
I do forgive thee (Iv.iii.162-165).
The power of the realm(Kingdom) is religned with Edgar, Albany and Kent being the only ones who can take the thrown due to the death of pretty much every member of King Lears family. I think the reason why we dont feel satisfied is because of the tragedy that occured to cause this realignment (multiple deaths) and because of the way that the doesn't exactly show us the completeness of this realignment (we aren't exactly told who's going to actually take Lears thrown).
At the end of the play Albany says, "Bear them from hense. Our present business / Is general woe. [To Kent and Edgar] Friends of my / soul, you twain / Rule in this realm, and the gor'd sustain (5.3.317-320). So, basically he is saying right now their only responsibility is to be mourning before dealing with any royal business regarding who becomes King, which is why we feel uncomplete regarding the realignment of the realm.
One act that would provide possible redemption for Edmund was when he does a good deed that he wishes could help create a happy ending. Edmund says someone must run to save the lives of Lear and Cordelia as revealed by Edmund,
I pant for the life; some good I mean to do
Despite of mine own nature. Quickly send,
Be brief in it, to th'castle; for my writ
Is on the life of Lear and on Cordelia.
Nay send in time (Iv.iii. 242-246)
Edmund is compelled to perform this act not only because of his realization of Goneril and Regan's intentions behind their deaths that he felt touched by as revealed by Edmund,
Yet Edmund was belov'd:
The one the other poison'd for my sake,
And after slew herself (Iv.iii. 238-240)
but he is also moved by Edgar's tale concerning Gloucester and Edgar's reunion which resulted in Gloucester's death as revealed by Edmund,
This speech of yours hath mov'd me,
and shall perchance do good (Iv.iii.199).
Therefore, these are the two events that made him feel guilty of his wrong doings and encouraged him to perform that act despite his nature before he taking his last breath.
