The Effects of Globalization on McDonald's

Globalization has made McDonald's into an international icon. In 1955, there was only one McDonald's. Only 4 years later, there were 100. Then, in 1963, the 500th restaurant was opened. In 1983, McDonald's expanded to 32 countries, with 7,778 locations. McDonald's reached the 112 country mark in 2009. As of 2014 there were more than 36,000 restaurants in the world.

1967 - First international restaurants open in Canada and Puerto Rico

1978 - 5,000th restaurant established in Kanagawa, Japan

1980 - 6,000th restaurant opens in Munich, Germany

1981 - Spain, Denmark, and the Philippines establish first restaurants

1983 - 32 countries have a McDonald's

1990 - Moscow's first McDonald's opened with 30,000 customers

1992 - Warsaw, Poland establishes a McDonald's restaurant

1996 - McDonald's has a website for most countries that are served

2003 - "I'm Lovin' It" was their first international ad campaign

2008 - China's 1,000th McDonald's restaurant opens

2008 - McDonald's recreated their global packaging design

2013 - 68% of the $27.6 billion made from international sales

2014 - They serve greater than 69 million people each

day in 119 countries

McDonald's Start

McDonald's first restaurant was founded in 1940 by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California.

Ray Kroc was the franchising agent of McDonalds in 1954 and later bought the rights to the name. He cared about quality, cleanliness, and value.

McDonalds made their franchisees follow their cleanliness and quality guidelines.

This video was shown during the 2015 Super Bowl. Multiple countries outside the U.S. including Canada and Mexico watch the Super Bowl which is an example of globalization.

In the 1990's McDonald's started catering to the international customers requests and preferences. An example is Italians instead of having fries want Parmesan Cheese and the French request fresh baked baguettes.

McDonald's adapts to what international customers want. That could be a new item on the menu, a change in the size of the item, or it could be a change in the appearance of the restaurant inside and out.
