Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian author born in 1977. We are going to read a short story that she has written, but first you must all watch a speech, that she gave at a TED-conference in 2009.

The speech is called The Danger of a Single Story, and is about how stereotypes are formed.

After watching the speech you must write your reflections, so it may be helpful for you to take notes while you watch the video. It is approximately 19 minutes long:

Work in pairs: Find benefits and disadvantages about having a lottery handing out green cards.

- from the perspective of migrant wishing to go to the USA.

Working with the idea of the American Dream and Immigration to the USA.

  • Write what happens next in the story (try to copy the tone and language in the story).
  • Retell the story from the perspective of the boyfriend, try using the second person narrative “you” - like in the short story we have just read.
  • Write about the death of Akunna’s father from the perspective of her mother - try using the second person narrative “you” - like in the short story we have just read.
  • Write a Newspaper reportage about the experience of migrants in the USA. You may use the exact same story - but the perspective and language should change to fit the genre.
