Examine the form of the poem. Where does the poet break the sentences in each stanza? Why does she format her work this way? What is she trying to achieve?

Every 9-10 sentences she break. She is trying to achieve the effect of each stanza representing a different part of life.

Choose one simile or metaphor. Explain how your example demonstrates courage.

Your courage was a small coal. This is a good example because it shows that even if you only have a little courage that your fire can still burn bright.

What is the meaning of this poem?

The meaning of this poem is to say that even if you have a bad life you can still be happy at the end of it.

What is the ton of the poem?

Stanza 1

The tone of this poem is sad in the beginning, but redeeming in the end.

This stanza explains the early life of the subject of the poem. You can see the author talking about a lot of firsts a child goes through. It seems that the subject of this poem went through some verbal abuse.

Similes, Metaphors, and personification:

The child's first step, as awesome a an earthquake- is an example of a simile. It means that a child's first step is a monumental moment.

when your heart went on a journey all alone.- is an example of personification.

made you into an alien, you drank their acid and concealed it.- is an example of a metaphor.

Stanza III

Stanza 3 is explaining how the subject went through great despair alone and changed their sorrow to eventual happiness.

wringing it out like a sock- is an example of a simile

powdered your sorrow,you gave it a back rub- is an example of personification

Stanza II

This stanza goes through the teenage years where, let's face it, kids are cruel. It also means that if you had a friend that was willing to take some of the heat off of you , then that friend didn't have courage, but loved you.

If you face the death of bombs and and bullets- is an example of metaphor for the hurtful words people said.

Your courage was a small coal-is n example of a metaphor

love as simple as a shaving soap-is an example of a simile

This stanza tells of the last potion of life where the subject has lived to old age and now that their courage has kept them alive all this time, they can bravely meet death.

when death opens the back door- is an example of personification
