Bandura's Observational Learning Theory

Learning does not necessarily mean a permanent change in behaviour.

Mental states are important to learning

Social Learning Concept:

Bandura described intrinsic reinforecment as an important factor of learning.

Children can imitate behaviour but it does not necessarily mean it will be practiced as regular behaviour.

1.) People can learn through observational learning

People learn and imitate behaviours they have learned through observing others.

Bandura's Big Idea

Stage 3: Reproduction

Stage 1: Attention

For the subject to learn successfully, the model needs to be interesting and intriguing.

Reproduction refers to actually performing or applying the behaviour you have learned and further practicing of that behaviour

Stage 2: Retention

Stage 4: Motivation

Behaviour is learned from the environment through the process of observational learning.

Motivation to practice the behaviour you have learned is the key for observational learning to be successful

reinforcement and punishment are important roles in observational learning to be successful.

Ex. If are offered candy if you use your full class time effectively, you may start working more productively

retention is the ability to store information but the ability to “pull up” the information is observational learning

The Modeling process

Bandura believed that certain requirements were necessary for social learning to be successful.

How does Bandura's theroy fit the definition of a theory?

"A theory is a set of interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that explains or predicts events or situations by specifying relations among variables".

What Was Bandura trying to figure out?

Bandura's theory fits this definition because during his Bobo doll experiment his theory was that children would imitate the actions from the higher authority or social staus figure. He relates the behaviour and actions with the concept of imitation and predicts the outcome.

How is behaviour learned through observation in an environment.

What effect does observing other's behaviour in an enviornment ultimatley have on an individuals own behaviour?

Change in Behaviour in Dimensions

“Actress, singer. Born Lindsay Dee Lohan on July 2, 1986, in New York City. Lohan's father, Michael Lohan, ran his family's pasta business and worked as an investment banker. Her mother, Donata "Dina" Sullivan, was a Wall Street analyst. Lohan grew up in the wealthy Long Island suburbs of Cold Spring Harbor and Merrick.”

In Conclusion...

Who's That Celebrity?

1.) Thinks about a situation in a different way and may react differently to it

2.) The change can occur due to someone’s personal experiences

3.) For the most part, the change made is permanent

As her celebrity status and popularity grew, so did Lohan's bad partying habbits. Her wild party lifestyle made Lohan instant tabloid fodder in recent years, from her father's prison scandals to rumors of her own struggles with bulimia and drug abuse. On May 26, 2007, Lohan was arrested after crashing her Mercedes-Benz crashed into a tree in Beverly Hills. She was arrested again July 24 in Santa Monica after she allegedly engaged in a car chase with the mother of her former personal assistant. She also has found herself in and out of rehab

There's no escaping this parent trap.

Troubled star Lindsay Lohan is a mess because she grew up witnessing a violent marriage marred by abuse and a rape, said mom Dina Lohan, who claims her ex-husband physically assaulted her during their 22-year union.

Dina made the explosive allegations in a interview at a Long Island hotel, armed with police and medical reports to back up her claims.

Michael Lohan vehemently denied assaulting or raping his ex-wife when reached at home Sunday night and questioned her motives in coming forward now with “evil lies” about decades-old events.

Dina, a slender, 50-year-old former dancer, said: “Lindsay saw her dad abuse me — that’s why she’s so screwed up.”

The history of lindsay lohans parents actually have a lot to do with lindsay lohans behaviour and prove Albert bandura’s theory explaining that with children and their parents its monkey see monkey do so since lindsay grew up being abused, watching abuse and witnessing a rape it probably has a lot to do with her lifestyle and the poor choices she makes. Seeing such horrible things makes her think that the partying and drug abuse is probably just minor and could also be the root to her anger issues which lead to both her charges and going to jail.
