Learning Objectives

  • Be able to describe technological and artistic achievements of the Paleolithic Age.
  • Define and describe the Neolithic Revolution.
  • Be able to give examples of the growth of farming villages.

Early Farming Methods and Domestication of Animals

  • Early farming methods included the slash-and-burn method. This is where trees and grasses are cut and burned to create farming ground.
  • Domestication- the taming of animals. Early animals that were tamed were horses, dogs, goats and pigs.

Causes

  • Scientists do not know exactly why this revolution occurred.
  • Rising temperatures, ready supplies of grain, and growing populations may have contributed to this revolution.

Catal Huyuk

  • Agricultural village located in present day Turkey that was home to appox. 6000 people.
  • Farmers produced large crops of wheat, barley, peas, as well as, sheep and cattle.
  • Evidence of skilled workers that specialized in pottery and weaving.
  • Many religious signs were dedicated to a mother goddess.

Neolithic Revolution

Villages Grow and Prosper

  • Also known as the Agricultural Revolution.

Achievements in Technology and Art

  • Villages began to grow bigger as agriculture became more of the focal point of early humans.
  • This began about 10,000 years ago and would completely change the way of life for the human.
  • As the human species advanced and adapted, so did their culture.
  • Many of these villages would settle near rivers and other bodies of water as they provided irrigation for their crops and animals.

New Tools

  • Nomads- people who wander from place to place with no set home. Nomads often travel in small family-groups.
  • Hunter-gatherers are groups of people who's movement depends soley on food sources.
  • Tools became more advanced as humans began to craft spears, knifes, fish hooks, and chisels began to be constructed using stones, bone, and wood.

Art

  • During the Paleolithic Age, humans began to create art. Some of this art includes, necklaces made out of seashells and animal teeth, ground mammal tusks to create beads, and small realistic sculptures.
  • The best well-known examples of art from this time frame is cave paintings. These paintings were not just exclusive to caves as many appeared on large rocks as well.
