Harriet Beecher Stowe (Cabin) suggests Jacobs sell her life story to her - Jacobs writes own memoirs while living with Nathaniel Willis.

Took Samuel Sawyer (lawyer) as consensual lover - harrassment continued. Escaped in 1835, hid in a swamp before settling in grandmother's cottage for 7 years.

Escaped to Philly/NYC by train - reunited with daughter. Brother also abolitionist in NY. Almost caught by Norcom (Fugitive Slave Act). Philadelphia friend secretly bought her freedom.

Incidents... becomes one of the most telling accounts of the abuse of black women in slavery.

Early Life

Born into slavery - Edenton, NC. Owned by Andrew Knox. Relatively "happy" childhood. "...so fondly sheilded; never dreamt I was a piece of merchandise."

Taught to read & write by Mistress Knox, who died when she was 12. Ownership went to 3 y.o. niece/Dr. James Norcom - abusive/molester.
