All About the Government

The country's flag

The type of government that runs Candyland is a demonarchy. This type of government is combination of a democracy and a monarchy. It is basically set up like the U.S. government with a few exceptions. Candyland's government consists of two branches and two monarchs. The first branch is the legislative which is unicameral. The one house consists of two representatives from each county of the country that have been elected by the people and they serve a term of 5 years as well as the Speaker of the House. Since the country is so small, there aren't really states but counties that are evenly divided in population. The job of the legislative branch is mainly to pass laws and impose taxes when needed. Before any of the legislative laws or taxes can be imposed they have to be approved by the queen to insure that it has reasonable cause and by the judicial branch to make sure it doesn't violate previous laws or citizen's rights. The other branch of government is the judicial. This branch is the national court system and its job is to resolve any and all cases. There are a total of 4 judges in the branch who serve for life. The queen has to be present in some cases when her responsibilities become apparent in the court room. One of the four judges is in charge of appeal courts that involve small disputes and arguments more than crimes and punishment. Also, the chief justice acts like a vice-president or duke as second in line to take the throne if something happens to the king. Plus, the three judges besides the chief justice have the power to overthrow the king and queen, only if they get majority vote from the legislative. In each county there is also a leader who acts like a mayor. This leader is always the head of the police and fire department. A person can have this office if they have passed the requirements for being a police officer and if they get the most votes by the people. Their job includes to report back to the queen about what the counties need, handle who gets arrested and sent to national or appeals court, and manage the police officers and firefighters according to what the king orders. The leader serves for 7 years. The two monarchs of the government are the king and queen. The king acts somewhat like a president. His main job is to protect the country from outside forces which includes declaring war and managing the army. He also has the power to regulate international trading as well as making treaties. The queen's job is to protect the citizens of the country. She does this by handling the postal service, healthcare, poverty, and the general welfare of the people. Both the king and queen are elected and run campaigns for the throne together and serve a term of 7 years. So, even though King Kandy and Queen Frostine have a daughter named Princess Lolly, the throne will not be inherited by divine right.

Queen Frostine

King Kandy

Queen Frostine is the current queen of Candyland. She has served 3 years out of her 7 year term. She was elected by the people because of her leadership and selflessness. She always makes sure to interact with the citizens of the country. She currently lives in the capital with the king and the princess.

King Kandy is the current king of Candyland. As of right now he has only served 3 years out of his 7 year term. He was elected by the people because of his manner of compromising and knowing when violence is absolutely necessary, which is what they valued in a king whose job is to control military forces. He currently lives in the capital CandyCastle with his wife, Queen Frostine and his daughter, Princess Lolly.

Location

Candyland is located in between the countries of Australia and New Zealand. It is mostly affected by flooding and hurricanes because of its location. As shown below

Educational System

Monetary System

The education in Candyland consists of free schools for all ages. Going to school is required by law. Schooling begins at the age of 6 and ends at the age of 17. Afterwords, the student gets to decide whether or not to go to college. Colleges are the only schools that have to be paid for by the student and/or their parents. Through most of the years students learn basic curriculum. Except when they are 16 they begin studying how to be successful at working and being a citizen. College allows for them to study for a specific field that the student wants to enter in for a job.

Military

Rights & Responsibilities of Citizens

The king is the one that has the power over the military, declaring war, and making peace. The military is only used when it is absolutely necessary. The military is divided into three sections; one section is for war at sea, another one is for airstrike, and the last one is the average army. If Candyland is attacked by an outside force then the military has the right to immediately react. The king decides ultimately afterwords on whether to further a war with the attackers. The king also makes the decision on when to send troops somewhere else to battle. Candyland's biggest allies when it comes to war are Australia and New Zealand. It is extremely rare for the military in Candyland to be needed because war is hardly existent.

Citizen's responsibilities include:

  • voting for officials in the government
  • reporting issues to the queen
  • enlist in the army voluntarily or when asked
  • respecting other people and their beliefs

Citizen's rights include:

  • inalienable rights (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness)
  • right to vote
  • freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, privacy, and petition
  • right to bare arms (only with a given license)
  • no quartering of soldiers without permission of the people
  • warrants are required for searches
  • right to fair trial
  • right to an attorney in court
  • no cruel and unusual punishment
  • citizen's also have other rights even if they are not written

Candyland citizens are expected to participate in the government in any way that they can. They are also expected to be kind and courtesy to every other citizen in the country. Citizens are expected to abide by the laws to benefit the common good and in order to have their rights. They are giving up small rights to government so they can live in a country with respect and order.

Map

Taxes and Welfare

In Candyland, the welfare of the people is a part of the queen's responsibility. However, it is the legislative branch's job to impose taxes. Citizens pay taxes on a yearly basis. Each year citizens pay a small percentage of their salaries to the government in order to pay for hospitals, schools, roads, etc. When they pay taxes, the amount they make and the expenses they have had to pay that year are taken in account in order to figure the amount of tax money they need to pay. Not only that but citizens have to pay a 6% tax on smaller goods such as food, groceries, clothes, etc. If taxes seem to become a problem to the people and the poverty rate grows then the queen has the power to lessen or remove the tax. All tax dollars go back to benefiting the common good.
