Goals for Nursing

To foster personality development

  • Driven by the devotion to nuture and encourage personalities to look on the brightside and moveforeward towards a holistic being

Hildegard Peplau strongly believes that there needs to be a therapeutic relationship between the nurse and the patient. Furthermore, Peplau explains this relationship in four phases. The phases go as follows:

Orientation, Identification, Exploitation, and Resolution.

The “Orientation” phase is the problem defining stage, which consists of the client seeking assistance and nurse responding by recognizing the problem.

The “Identification” stage is when the client takes a position of dependence, interdependence, or independence in the relation to the nurse. The nurse’s goal is to assure the client that they understand the client’s situation.

The third stage, “Exploitation” is when the client recognizes what the nurse can offer through this therapeutic relationship. Also, the client uses their own resources and the power transfers from the nurse to client.

In the “Resolution” phase new and mature needs are implemented, once the old needs have been resolved.

Purpose is to implement a type of nursing practice that goes beyond the physical and physiological aspect = incorporates emotional aspects.
