Living & Non Living Components of Ecosystems

Weather and Climate

Weather: physical conditions, in given area over a period of time

Climate: Long term average condition of weather in a given area

Tropical climate zone: near equator, intense sunlight, warm always

Polar climate zone: earth's poles, cold

Temperate climate zone: in between, not extreme, 4 seasons

Solar energy, earth's rotation, patterns, water movement and atmosphere influence climate which in turn determines whether the physical env. is habitable or not.

Biome: distinctive climate w. distinctive kind of biological community adapted to those conditions. Determined by the types of climate and dominant plant life.

Terrestrial(relating to earth) Biome: Dominant vegetation

3 Major types of forests

According to seasonality (latitude) or characteristics

1a)Tropical Rain Forrest

1b) Tropical Dry Forrests

2) Temperate Forrest

Vegetation & Ecology

Warm

High humidity

Heavy rainfall

No distinct cool or dry season

Rapid Decomposition

nutrient cycling

Trees

Birds

Arboreal vertebrates

Animal life

Source of food & medicines

Logging, farming

Survive harsh winters/ severe droughts

Decomposition

Young ecosystem

Lower species richness

Canopy allows light

Birds, mammals, Fungi & bacteria(lots)

Humans use for logging and farming

Asia

Seasonal climate

Distinct dry and cool

Seasonal migration

Less species

Richer nutrients- agriculture

Humans replace forest w. farms & cattle

Erosion

Japan

Distinct warm & cool seasons

Long, warm summers(mar-nov)

High rainfall

Moist & long summer

Cold & dropping leaves

Spring- grow new leaves

Autumn- red and yellow

ALL GRAPHS HAVE THE MONTHS SHADED

THE TEMP IS CONSTANT SO ST. LINE

LINE OF p IS HIGH

vegetation levels

Emergents: tallest trees, most light

Canopy: upper part, lil sunlight, shelter, leaves

Under Canopy: limited sunlight

Shrub layer: floor/ground, huge leaves capture light, can flood

Vines reach for treetops to gain access to sunlight

Boreal (Cold) Forrest

Wet & Dry
